Qld GPS Rugby 2022

Well done to Nudgee finishing on top of the table if you take into account the unofficial points differential. Yesterdays exhibition was a good hard fought game against a physically superior side who showed what a difference big bodies make.
Superior across the park really despite the cobwebs. Barker looked less than up to scratch if I’m honest apart from a few standouts.

Barker had so many injuries this game that they actually were playing more 2ndXV players than 1stXV players… this means nothing.
In a similar fashion to the number of absences Joeys had the day they played Barker…. Like for like, it is hard to say who was the best.

No. Very few absences. The boys supposedly played sick. I believe Barker were actually missing more players than Joeys were ironically.

Was impressed with the #8 for Barker, Lachlan Hooper. He is the younger brother of Tom Hooper who got a fair amount of game time with the Brumbies at #6 this year and is only 21. Lachlan well worth keeping an eye on.

It looked like a great day on Ross Oval with close to full grand stand, which I guess is one of the reasons Nudgee were the school chosen in the NSW locally hero named cup, the Manu Sutherland Cup (like the Ella Cup in the England Wallaby match). I wonder if Queensland rugby will ever get a mention...

Barker were clearly the stronger team and much bigger also with the average age being over a year on the Nudgee team. It was good to see Nudgee blood some young guns at the end of their season such as the U16 Prestyn Laine-Setu who is still quite small but should grow into the 1st XV next year.

I think in Qld TSS, Churchie and Nudgee were all pretty even and there was no standout team but I understand Barker dominated the NSW rugby and I think they deserve to be the team of the year.

On another topic, did anyone get down to Riverside Rugby Club (Bulimba) to watch any of the Emerging Reds Cup games for the U15’s and U16’s? The quality of the matches, particularly the U16’s was of a very high standard and this U16 age group (born 2006) this year looks very strong. Brisbane White took out both the U15’s and U16’s comps with last round wins over Brisbane Grey.

The SEQ U16’s can count themselves unlucky finishing undefeated with 2 wins and a draw, however not picking up any bonus points cost them the title to Brisbane White who picked up a bonus point win and had the superior points for and against. A subsequent Qld Reds U16’s Squad was selected per the attached to play in a National U16 Super Rugby Championship against the other Australian Super Rugby franchises starting next month which is a fantastic opportunity.

I watched quite a few of the games and thought the standard was excellent. Lots of draws over the three days goes to show how tight the competition was. Great to see some rep rugby opportunities opening up again for the boys. U16s is a very strong and highly competitive age group and some pretty talented boys who played GPS 1st xv this year missed selection into the Reds team. Will be interesting to see how they match up to their interstate counterparts

Yes, I did see a few familiar names who played 1st XV for there respective GPS schools and missed selection in the Reds 16's! Hopefully this gives them the impetus and drive to work on there game in the off season to better themselves for next year rather than have a dummy spit .... after all, it is only U16's!!!! Agreed that it's great to see representative rugby back for the junior rep age groups (U15's, U16's, U18's & U19's) to give those boys (and girls) the opportunity to strive for higher honours and get some much needed depth back into Australian rugby because hopefully it wont be another 20 years until the Bledisloe Cup returns back to Aussie shores

Pity QLD Rugby has not put anything together for the U20 cohort. This was the age group that got screwed worse by Covid with everthing being stopped.

Especially as it is where Brad Thorn commenced his coaching career (Qld U20 of the day)

Good to see the Qld u18 Academy teams beating NSW, Victoria.

With Qld being able to benefit by bringing in people who finished year 12 the previous year due to the age imbalance between Qld and NSW it evens up the imbalance we see when it is a top NSW grade 12 school team v a top Qld grade 12 school team. When the age issue is eliminated and there is a level playing field the Qld u18s are dominating.

At Wallaby level we of course continue to see a small percentage of Qld players in the fold (I wonder why we haven't won a Bledisloe Cup in 20 years!). Reminds me of the Paul McLean/Qld years. If Qld dominates, we get a handful of players in the Wallaby team. Same with school boys.

That's what happens when the "North Shore Mafia" get control.

Yes they name all the national competitions after themselves with no self awareness that this is a national rugby union and not a Sydney rugby union but it is great when we are on level playing field, whether its League or Union, whether its school boy or open teams, and we own them on the pitch.

Credence to Barker College, but when we bring in a level playing field/age group with the u18 Academy, Qld tells the story.

Barker dominated.

Yes, it's what I heard. The size difference was significant with that extra year to grow. They were the top team in Australia.

Once the u18s came in on the weekend though for the Qld schools team, Qld beat the NSW school boys with that size/age differential removed.

What will be interesting will be the World Schools Cup with both Nudgee and Barker being short listed to represent Australia. I personally think Barker should get the nod even though they are not as well known internationally as Nudgee but it will present a great opportunity for Barker to gain that reputation and they are a better chance at competing in this competition with their size.

I totally agree Rugby Man. Apart from a few years, Qld usually dominate NSW, certainly the last few years, but when it comes to Wallaby Selection, you would swear the Waratahs were the better team. Has been going on since the Ella Brothers v Gould and McLean. I was at that game at Ballymore when the crowd booed the fullback Ella (Gary or Glen?). Not a good look and tough on him but Roger was the better fullback. Brought about yet again by biased selections for the Wallabies. Tate MacDermott got a very raw deal this year I thought.

Yes I saw the u18s Aussie team and only a couple of Qlders are in there. It's literally a scandal how this bias holds back Australian rugby from progressing. It's essentially the NSW team with some support from the other states. Always has been. Shocking that it continues until today. Yes the McLean v Ella period was farcical with Qld putting on 50 points over NSW at the time and Mclean dominating Ella, but the NSW/ARU/Randwick mafia still even then couldn't help themselves. It's a continuing disgrace to Australian sport.
