France v Wallabies (RWC Warm-up), 28/8 1.45AM AEST

Went and had a look at the stats, he only made 1 out of 3 attempted tackles and conceded two turn overs.

Interestingly enough Gordon made 10/12 though we all saw that a couple of those successful tackles took him 10m to bring down Danty. Gordon made the most amount of tackles out of anyone on the field (tied 1st with Fraser), he had a better tackle percentage than Foketi, Petaia, Nawaqanitawase, and Kellaway. Suli nailed his 5/5.
I actually find this concerning if it's fact. Your 10 shouldn't be topping your tackle count.

You don't see Jalibert topping the French stats, it's people like Cros, Ollivon & Alldritt (6, 7, 8)...

You wont see Russell, Bryne, Ford, Libbok, Carreras etc... topping the counts in their games, even those games where they're heavily involved defensively.

It's pretty common, most teams target the 10 in defence, if he's not hidden out the back (like Quade). It'll keep happening because Carter's good enough to tackle in the line so we'll keep him there. We did the same thing to Jalibert, he had the most attempted tackles (6/10) for the backline.

edit: Jalibert actually attempted more tackles than every other french player bar his back row.

One thing I loved were the attacking high bombs, this is stuff that wins you RWC games actually. Think 2003 (close) and NZ to us in 2011. The contenders don’t really have any tall wingers, especially SA. Could this be a path for Vunivalu over Koro? Maybe. I knew Eddie wasn’t a complete mug.

Gordon executed these well.

Yes, I’m well aware of the tactics around running at the 10, but it is not common for a 10 to top the tackle stats for a side. Something is odd if that’s the case. Feel free to point to other international games where this has been the case?

btw, what stats are you using? Edit: saw you said ESPN Stats a page back.

Be nice if we still had Dan McKellar wouldn’t it. The maul is so flaccid.
ARGH!

This is the other thing that shits me with the whole Eddie experiment, the great assistants we lost.

I'm a one eyed Brumbies fan but does anyone really think we have better assistants now then last year?

If the rumours about Eddie are true you cant blame them for turning him down.

I'm also leaning on the ESPN stats. I guess it's just easy to find them.

Team stats suggest to me that the EJ (Eddie Jones) strategy/game play is working - he's done pretty much what I would hope for. Not convinced?
Aus possession: 55%/50%
Aus territory: 63%/59%
Note that it didn't seem that we often won the kicking battle but still achieved those figures.
Rucks 95% (v France 92%)

We are in the right part of the field and with enough possession, with adequate ruck work to put the team into a position to win.

I felt that our lineout had reverted to hopeless, but based on the stats not so bad. Our scrum was dominating though not a lot of opportunity for it in the game.

Arnold is getting a kicking here, I thought his ruck-work was fabulous especially in the first 30, though he achieved little in the hard yards taking it up the guts.

Gordon's tackle count clearly shows a tactical win buy the French who targeted him. I'd hope that our D training looks at it more closely.

Some nice developments:
1. in spite the positive thoughts around certain reds supporters over Vunivalu's effectiveness this year, he finally stepped up to the plate wearing gold.
2. Tupou left the field without injury and nothing happened to suggest that we will be highly compromised by Nongorr taking the field.
3. Big Will's first captaincy was fine.
4. McReight held a steady quality and actually got better I thought, through the game.
5. While I might have preferred getting them on earlier, Gleeson, IFS and Donaldson looked settled at this level. Hooper has remained settled. I'd say the same about Kellaway though note fans have been expecting bigger things from him than I am.

Problems:
1. Kicking for points
2. Lineout
3. Maul
4. Discipline - at the end the penalty count was pretty even, but we gifted territory and possession with back to back penalties.

Remove the back-to-back discipline issue and solve the kicking and we would be going close. Against a full strength France at home.

So who does the kicking then?
Bring in Ryan Lonergan.
Which is unlikely at this stage.

but I would even consider Kellaway or Tate. They aren’t proven at all, but either is Gordon and at least Kellaway and Tate would probably handle the pressure better.

To be fair it never got any better when he came on board last year
I think we just ditch the thing. We tried it multiple times last night with zero success. I’ll rephrase, use it sparingly but do something else as well so that the opposition don’t know what we are going to do every lineout in the 25.

be fair, he did get the job on short notice so there wasn’t many decent assistants available.

I actually think this is one of the primary weaknesses of the team. But I also expect it to be fixed after the RWC.

Eddie’s pretty good at the cameo coaches brought in like Hansen or Andrew Jones.

These are really bad trolls, even for you.

So Foley is a poor kicker now and Lonergan a gun?

No, but Lonergan has a history of being a gun goal kicker... I'm not surprised that he's taking shots for goal.

Nor would I be surprised if Foley had that role.

We don't pick them for their goal kicking either or Edmed would be in the mix
Apparently not. TBF France directed almost all of their close in attack down Gordons channel, as all other teams in this RWC will. For this reason having a bigger body like Hodge or a more accomplished 10 as another option on the bench would just be plain smart.
We cannot be happy going into this tournament knowing we have no chance just in the name of building for the future. The time for this is in a couple of months when the dust from this RWC has settled.
