I'd love to see a png side in the hospital cup but it looks like all the pacsports money for png is going to go to them getting an nrl side

Big reason we won't and should not abandon Super Rugby Pacific, or at least Pacific/Asian based competition (alternative being a domestic professional game).

Asia-Pacific is the No 1 growth region in the world. The next 20 years will see it continue to grow and Australia's place in it will be a central one. Add in strategic competition with China and there is an easy case for Rugby to be a central part of our soft power strategy in the region. There is a behemoth there, it just has to be unlocked.

League is a religion in PNG. We should put all our chips on other horses (and I know Will Genia is the exception that proves the rule).
There's a bit going on with rugby in PNG at the moment - the Port Moresby club comp, Capital Rugby Union, has been making some moves to get some high profile faces in and around. Genia, Giteau, Digby Ionae, Aidan Toua, among others have all been over there making some noise this year.

Union probably can't beat League over there, but I reckon it can take a piece of the pie

100% but it would have to take us to invest in, the pngru are never going to be able to stand on their own 2 feet & do it

NRL will be expanding with a PNG team in the next 5 years. Which might shut the door a bit.

No commercial reason for expansion into PNG so NRL wont do it. PNG being in the comp doesn't sell any more Kayo subscriptions.
Government funding coming in. They want to expand to 20 teams. They will also have a 2nd NZ team in the next 10 years. Say what you want about the horse guy but he's a bloody good businessman who has an eye on the international future of League. See this article: https://www.afr.com/politics/federal/labor-s-7m-could-pave-way-for-pacific-nrl-team-20230816-p5dwwn

There also is a commercial reason, more teams = more games = more tv revenue. Helps their ambition to grow their international game as well.

Is PNG going to be based there or Aus and just take games there? Top end talent is not going to live in Port Moresby.

That was the NRL idea with a pacific side being based out of Cairns.

Roll back the clock 20 years, Super rugby will take over the world. Asian & American Conferences, who's gonna pay for our Rugby, and here we are 20 years later still trying to unlock the great behemoth.

The prime reason why Rugby will go nowhere in Australia, why grow the game in Australia when all we have to do is unlock the great Behemoth.

You sure about that? Smart Traveller pretty much tells you to ignore all of PNG. I don't think it'd go down all that well if Australian dollars were spent there and an Aussie player or tourist ended up in a place they shouldn't be.

Hell, Corporates won't even let you leave the compound when you travel there.

At a national level, PNG is enormously important to us. Yes, security is iffy, but I would bet that the league authorities would make sure that players and officials are safe.

On the brighter side, looks like the Rugby Australia are spreading there wings :):):)

the whole public school narrative regarding league/union is a load of crap, I also guarantee most of these writers went to a private school.

Not like Rugby don’t provide plenty of material.

Rugby is a pretty strong demographic of who they like to make fun of. Only have to read some comments on any making fun of their own leaning to see.

End of the day it’s better than this
