Melbourne Rebels 2024

These people. Rugby fans living breathing working paying taxes in Victoria. Rugby Union fans happy to go to a Bled or a RWC but don't support the Rebels. Surely easiest latent population to convert and a shame that Rebels didn't manage it.

Sometimes I think a Kiwi Melbourne would have more success than the Rebels.

That's why an Aus comp would work, Melbourne would have more fans if there team wasn't up against kiwi teams for the simple fact that the massive kiwi population won't support a side against there own sides. They all want the Rebels here so once in a while they get to see the side they still support from home play in Melbourne, but won't get behind a Aussie side against any kiwi sides.

That's why an Aus comp would work, Melbourne would have more fans if there team wasn't up against kiwi teams for the simple fact that the massive kiwi population won't support a side against there own sides. They all want the Rebels here so once in a while they get to see the side they still support from home play in Melbourne, but won't get behind a Aussie side against any kiwi sides.

I think the plan with the domestic only comp would be to have a tournament end of season against the kiwi sides - to then crown Tasman champion.

so I still suspect kiwis would support blues canes etc.

From another group I'm in: I believe the previous directors want a deed of company arrangement so that the Administrators can review the prior directors claims that RA owes MRRU approx $8m and see whether this can be pursued

Probably both. I won't doubt the commitment of the board members; many have given their own hard-earned money to fund the Rebels. But also a useful mitigation strategy to reduce their debt and protect what they have left.

Honestly, I feel it's more focused on saving the Rebels.

Not knowing you from Adam, giving myself a 60% chance that your time in Melbourne preceded the establishment of SANZAAR was a good bet.

Regardless, your experience -- even if it was "a lot of time" -- is largely irrelevant.

If RA get done for that $8M, and with the $5M to keep the Rebels in 2024, and the $5+M for the NRL recruit, that takes them very close to topping out their drawdown.

Also, if the Rebels can prove, and the court agrees that RA owes $8m to the Rebels, that could give a significant chunk to the Tax Man, and may prove the Rebels are solvent. The directors want the Rebels to keep going not to take their ball and go home.

That is excellent news for The Rebels - might not be such great (financial) news for RA.

If they get the $8m claimed to be owed from RA, then the ATO (as long as a payment plan is agreed) will be less aggressive.

Still not convinced by the Rebels board as a unit going forward though.

If I lived in Auckland and was supporting the Blues and local rugby, I would support the Blues against everyone except the Rebels and Munster. Even now the Blues play the Tahs, I am supporting the Blues. Only Aussie side besides the Rebels who I will support in those games is the Brumbies, the rest of the time I just want to watch a good game really.

It's an interesting outcome here. If the legal argument is solid, that brings the Tax bill back down to a manageable level, the bulk of the remaining creditors then either directly or indirectly (e.g. MOPT via Vic Government) have a vested interest in seeing MRRU continue to operate.

Is that how Rebels fans feel? Seems an odd thing to release but I am not emotionally involved with what is going on so maybe it's not a big deal.
