Wallabies v Fiji, Sunday, 6 July, 1:30pm @ McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Well played Fiji.
Wallabies ….
Was so pumped after the effort of the Waratahs last night. Today Wallabies looked to be putting in the effort of a training run.
so much aimless kicking, even on the break.
no effort to get the ball to JAS in space
I hope the game is a wake up call as otherwise Lions will demolish.
And what the hell happened to set pieces.
but I do enjoy a daylight game.

One of my key takeaways is the TMO is far too involved at this level, it’s really a downer and we won’t have won any fans with that performance or the way the game is officiated.

The Fijians missing a try because an Aussie player went into touch a phase earlier is a real blight on the game imho.
More to the point. Have proper refs on the field that can actually call it in real time. What the hell was the touchie looking at ?

Scratchy performance. Which is always the case with the first match of the season. Left probably 2 tries out there. And gifted them a couple. Particularly that one before half time.

There was a lot of rust in that but people need to chill a bit. We'll be better for the run.

Noah getting sprayed as usual but if hes out for the first test we'll see the other options are even less up for it. Missed touch once and a bad option on halftime but otherwise the ball got where it needed too.
Fully agree, couple of changes and players coming back from small niggles and injuries and you have a very competitive side.

There is lots to work on and much of it is in the top 2 inches coupled with cleaning up some simple skills (ie,. pass backwards).

Williams had a number of individaul moments which were really poor. Three penalties, one for not getting back onside for a charge down and then there was the one for the maul setup where he was in front of the jumper. Just let Fiji off the hook. Not good enough.

Wright, just not good enough to blow those two try opportunites with those forward passes. Hopefully it's just him and wingers needing to adjust/gel. Maybe they're pushing up further than he'd like/is use to.

Tate had some individually poor moments. Some decision making not good enough.

Lolesio likewise. I thought he was generally really solid, great off the tee, looked composed, I was relatively impressed, but that kick before 1/2 time (so bad) and some of his options taking when we had advantage. Really hope the poor guy is ok.

Porecki had some good carrys, was hitting rucks, nice hands/tip on passes, but the two not straight throws were not good enough. Again let Fiji off. He needed more game time. The HIA is really unfortunate.

On the positive, Potter and Jorgerson were generally really good. Potter in particular I was really impressed with. The starters were really solid in defence in the first half I thought. The Wallabies were controlling the game well. Gleeson I thought had a really solid game, with really good work rate. Wilson was likewise excellent. McRieght and Ikatu their usual solid selves. I actually thought White was good when he came on. Settled things. Even little plays like his kick over to pin Fiji down in their 22 just showed some rugby smarts.

There were three key issues that turned this from a comfortable win to a desperate escape from jail.

1. Two (maybe three?) obstructions at the attacking lineout. Theyve been hard on this in Super Rugby all year so no excuses.
2. Failing to end the half like a normal team
3. Tom Wright forgetting how to pass left to right.

Plenty of other issues but if you delete the above we win by 20.

Same touchie also missed clear forward pass from Wright which for some reason took at least 20 views before making a decision. Ridiculous
I reckon ! The TMO likes to get involved. Not sure he didn't say it's clearly forward. Let's go. Instead of finding an angle for 5 minutes.
