Rugby Championship 2025 : South Africa v Australia Round 2

Needs to make those kicks, but wholeheartedly disagree on the pass to Kellaway. He did very well to draw in the man and give Kellaway space and time and you clearly see him take a look which causes the drop. Entirely on him, the pass was the right option.
Man. It was a shithouse pass. Right option if you can execute and he didn’t.

Uh huh

OK one last self-indulgent radical declaration from me:

Eight weeks ago, I know I wasn't alone in thinking we were about to get nilled by the Lions and probably go through the RC without a win.

Today I'm thinking "If White and Wright played 60 mins each last night, the boys would be coming home from South Africa undefeated, on top of the RC table".

I'm genuinely dizzy from the turnaround.

Molman. I agree the pass was definitely on and the right option. Just a poor one. Kellaway probably should have grabbed it but in the conditions and around his ankles not ideal. My point is more that most punters have been quick to criticise Lolesio and Donaldson but far less critical of JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor) and Lynagh in costly mistakes... which everyone makes. Anyway, Wallabies are looking good .
I don’t know if this is actually true regarding Noah. Everyone was pretty excited when he started but that after he didn’t really get the side going fans got sick of him. If lynagh doesn’t improve he will get the same treatment. But he’s safe atm because he’s 22 and played 5 tests. Only watched the mini so I only saw JOCs missed kicks and his dodgy pass to kellaway but sounds like he didn’t have the best night. But then what’s the point of criticising him when he’s 35 and quite clearly a stop gap option? We know he’s not greatest option but he’s hardly preventing anyone else from steering the ship.
Anyways, like you said Wallabies are starting to look good.

Unlikely. The next two weeks will most likely see both Nic and Gordon available. Tate is a must so either one of the others comes in and Ryan misses out again.
Apparently Schmidt’s standard is that you have to be fit to train by Monday - which only gives Gordon 1 more week. And we can see that when in doubt Schmidt has choosen not to risk guys with niggles. Also, not sure exactly how long White has postponed his retirement.

You could be right that we don’t see him but, at some point, Schmidt needs to call up the next man.

Definitely watch the whole game. O'Connor did a lot right with the ball and defended very well, but those missed kicks...

I was chatting to a mate afterwards (cricket/AFL fan with a passing familiarity with rugby) and told him about O'Connor's performance. He said "I feel like you and I are having a conversation we had over a decade ago" and I think that kind of captures it. He's a stopgap, he's definitely our best choice at the moment, and he's doing really well. But as has always been the case with O'Connor, if you want that Ellis Park rainbow, you're going to have to sit through some rain.

Did he look tired kicking towards the end? Surely Edmed could have taken over.

Firstly, congrats to SA.

for the WBs, man that BP would have been nice. I think it would have been fitting.

Doleman, OK he’s not a ref that deserves plaudits but I can’t say he wasn’t even handed. We need to deal with it.

I have often felt that Tate deserved more chances at the start, this game explained neatly how he fits the bench tempo lift.

enjoyed seeing Nonngorr getting time, yes he needs to build. I just think it’s going fine.

I don’t think our centres are right, though reduced time here. WBs dealt with the position shuffles quite nicely.

Tupou is on the improve, good to see. Wonder how we’d go without Skelton? Less well. OTOH we have depth in the loose forwards. And wingers.

I’m enjoying the Wallsbies again.

I keep making it because it's true. Lynagh got off lightly imo. I think all 4 of them are good players and we need depth in all positions. Edmed did pretty well although not sure he should have been laughing when he kicked it out on the full from the kick off to start the second half?
That was almost a wonderful restart. Pity.

Tough decision to make in the back row. Who misses out between the bloke who's been MOTM against the Boks and the bloke who started the season fairly widely regarded as "Australia's only world XV player".

It's particularly difficult because what distinguishes all three of them is their incredible engines and ability to go full send for 80 mins.
I'd do Valetini-McReight-Wilson and then hooper on the bench

If you start with Skelton that leaves our lineout with Frost, Wilson and Valetini as jumpers. Not ideal. Balance looks pretty good when Hooper starts at 6. It's such a toss of the coin between Bobby and Wilson. Bringing Bobby off the bench may be a good way of managing his workload.
