Sydney Subbies 2025

Numberthree

My understanding was that Subbies were going to push/enforce/group clubs together that have women’s sides. Like they’ve done with Colts this year. I’d assume that push would start with Div 1…
How do they enforce it when the untouchables know they can do whatever they want and stay in div 1? Hell, Waverley went a season without fielding colts not long back and subbies was "please move along, nothing to see here".

Incorrect.

Measures were taken. Waverley now field Colts.

Div 2 Finals predictions.

The 6 club comp has reached the finals. Petersham, UNSW & Briars the heavy hitters in 2025 with their top 3 grades all qualifying. Petersham also have colts and Briars 4s. UNSW the only club with all grades qualifying. This means it’s harder for these 3 clubs to “stack” and will test their depth.

The 6 club comp, 4 club finals system means that there are some teams throughout the grades that have qualified with a pretty average record so I think there’ll be some blowouts in week 1.

BARRACLOUGH
Petersham beat Irish 13+
Briars beat UNSW by 5 (Match of the Weekend)

Irish are average in 1s and Petersham will have them covered.
UNSW v Briars a toss of the coin. If Briars find form they’re hard to beat and I’m told they’ll have some home ground advantage this week. Might be a bit harsh on UNSW who have had a great season and would be deserving grand finalists. Should be a great game.

STOCKDALE
Petersham beat Briars 13+
UNSW beat Irish 13+

Petersham and UNSW have easily been the best in 2s this year and should win these matches comfortably.

ROBERTSON
St Pat’s beat Forest 13+
UNSW beat Petersham by 3

Well done to Forest who didn’t have a colts to start 2025. Great work to get back in the picture but finals run will be short lived.
We had an early taste of finals over the weekend with Petersham winning 7-3 over UNSW. Nothing in this one but expecting UNSW to get some revenge to set up a 2024 Robertson Cup rematch.

BLUNT CUP
UNSW beat Forest 13+
Briars beat St Pat’s 13+

The Blunt Cup ladder says a lot. Log jam between some average teams in the middle with Briars and UNSW flying high. All I’d be wary of in the lower grades are your players that haven’t played much all year that come out of the woodwork for finals and then the clubs that get tricky with eligibility. In this case St Pat’s and Forest don’t have 1s or 2s in finals so their priorities may have shifted.

RICHARDSON CUP
Waverley beat Briars by 5
UNSW beat Forest 13+

Briars depth to be tested by Waverley 6s who on their day are fit and fast. UNSW to make light work of Forest.

Good luck to all clubs going into finals.
Interesting year in Div 2 and interesting to see what happens into the future.

Was the Irish experiment a success? Will Forest & St Pat’s bounce back? Will the top 3 clubs be able to sustain their strength?

Get in your time machine and go complain in the Subbies thread from a couple of years ago.

There's a good chap.
Feel free to not be a butthurt whenever I post. My comment speaks directly to the discussion about JJC, subbies have shown no inclination to enforce anything on the untouchables historically so why would that change now?

I’d think there will be a few people unhappy if the lower teams beat the higher ranked sides and qualify for the final. But everyone has known the importance of 1st place all year so hard to complain.

Remarkably I think the Irish experiment has been a success. They’ve competed every week and not been blown away. A lot of help has meant they can field the full grades and may need to be adjusted but without them there wouldn’t of been a Division 2.

I tend to agree that Irish has been a success and a ups to Waverley and Burraneer for their assistance. It was never going to be perfect but the only complaint I've heard is having Colts playing at Burraneer and rest of the club at Coogee, which is understandable. Puts strain on clubs volunteer resources. Then again, is Burraneer a long term answer or a short term fix for 2025?

My thought is to align the Colleagues 2 colts with Irish which will mean a much more local travel effort for visiting clubs. Not sure what it means for the Hills situation but makes more sense given there location and divisions.

Ideally we would see Burraneer Colts and Burraneer grade have some relationship and lift them into the Division 4 comp to strengthen that and a better travelling fit as well.
