On Tuesday after a solid training session in wet and greasy conditions at the Wanderers ground, Schmidt has a full complement from which to pick the team, assistant coach Tom Donnelly said.
He rejected suggestions that playmaker James O’Connor was at training only to “help the team prepare”. Only Will Skelton who failed a medical after suffering an injured ankle has been ruled out with Carter Gordon recovering from a twinge in his quad.
Donnelly said it was clear in the past two games that the area around the breakdown needed work in order to create space for the ball carriers. He said if the backs can get quicker ball then the team can play with more space. Ireland too have been lacklustre in recent matches, struggling with their line out, nervous fumbles and some problems with the scrum, which has given Ireland coach Andy Farrell has some selection battles of his own.
