Oh cmon this is garbage. The fact is, every GPS school entice sporting talent to their school, its fact. Yet its what you do with that talent that earns premierships. Joeys have done it very well with their aboriginal program as has iggies, i have no doubt that without a strong coaching structure and playing pool, premierships would not of been won soley of the back of these programs.
All this talk about scolarships are taking the shine of what should be a glorious newington premiership. The fact is that Luani was in the seconds last year, Allatoa was viewed as not as good as his brother and ezra was seen as a potential 8 in year 12, and Apo well he has been a gun forever. But the fact is that Newington has developed this talent and not bought it. The only player that is on the Talented sportsman scheme from yesterdays 15 was Apo. Much like keliti back in year 8, Newington has provided a safe haven for apo and have developed him acedemically more so than his sporting ability.
These arguments are being made by sad supporters that cant handle that there is a change in GPS culture and dominance. This Newington team should be aplouded as being the best schoolboy team in the country and nothing should be taken from them.

Well said Blue and Black. Apo is the best kid you could ever hope to meet - polite, respectful and real leader. He shouldn't be denied a good education just because he can play rugby. The Newington coaching staff also deserve a big wrap - they have taken Apo and Luani (reserve) from GPS 3rd's to Aust Schoolboys in jut two seasons.

Agree that Newington should be able to celebrate the premiership without these accusations - they earned it and deserve it

Disagree about the 'best schoolboy team in the country' part. I still rate Kings as the better team, and I honestly blame the absence of Wylie on their unsuccessful GPS season. Besides, there exists other competitions outside of NSW GPS.

Kings are indeed the better team on paper but the simple fact is the've lost two games. Injuries are a fact of life with the short GPS season and every team has to deal with them. Joeys lost Bond this year and Scots have been without Atkinson for a number of games. And New would probably have won the premiership last year if Roods had not been injured.

Very true, Apo is a fine example of the TSP at newington. A great kid with a huge future.
I also agree with the coaching wrap. Gilly has been through alot at the helm, going through the dark days of 2004 and the near losses of last year and they year before. He has developed a team over the years that have proved to be unbeatable.

Disagree with the Kings comment. They have the best players, no doubt about it, but they are not a great team in the true sense of the word, as much as that opinion may pain Kings supporters.

I'll quote myself so you can have another go at learning how to read.

I'm a bit conflicted here. On the one hand, I think that GPS sporting scholarships is a debate worth having. On the other hand, we've got two topics here that people are unable to stay cool about: their school, and race. If someone wants to start a separate thread on this issue I would find that acceptable. However, people entering the debate should be VERY careful to remain open and curious, and not simply biased in favour of their own school. And of course, to keep the issue of race out of it wherever possible.

Until someone starts a thread in a reasonable way, I would like no more scholarship discussion in this thread, OK?

It seems that:

(1) You are unable to follow instructions
(2) Are happy to arrive on a forum that has been going for 3 years due to hundreds of hours of my free labour and abuse me.

The same will keep on happening to all schoolboys posters who can't learn the rules of this forum. The next step will be closing down schoolboys board. And believe me, we are not far off making that decision.

I certainly think Newington will have a very strong side next year with the likes of Pryor-Lees to replace Luani and Vlahos to replace Apo and 2nd's players like Vrachnas, Pennington, Ratcliffe and Loseli to step up. However, they firstly need to defeat Riverview next week to wrap up a stand alone premiership and become undefeated champions. Riverview at home will not be easy. Newington beat them everywhere but the scoreboard last season and in this years trials Riverview led Newington in the first half.

Of course very difficult to compare 2 games 31 years apart but I was there for both. Newington scored 5 converted tries in 1979. Today I think they scored 8 tries, 4 goals and a penalty. The 1979 game was played at midday on a beautiful sunny day to allow the crowd time to get to the SCG to watch the Wallabies play Ireland at 3:15pm. I don't remember much of the Test Match but I remember most of the Scots game and can recall 3 of the 5 tries like they happened yesterday.

I thought 1979 was perfection but today was something else altogether. Today was a day no Newington supporter will forget for a very long time. 8 tries and 51 points against a Joeys team playing to win a Premiership? 500 Newington boys will remember today and most of those 8 tries forever. Another beautiful sunny day.

I was also at both games. The win in 1979 was great but cannot even begin to compare to yesterday's victory. When you are used to sneaking a lucky 1 point win against Joeys every decade or so (2002: 6-5) to defeat Joeys to win the premiership is the stuff of dreams. To do it at home is historymaking. And to do it in front of 5,000 people and score 51 points is the staff that legend are made of. I spoke to many many Old Boys yesterday and most agreed it was the greatest day of their lives.

Who was the New lad who scored that try for the Twos after kicking through? I thought it was 13. Ratcliffe but it may have been 12. Loseli. He's a good footie player and has a lot of toe, and whoever he was, the other guy is good too.

Winger Vlahos will go to 12 next year? With the Twos midfield available New will be spoilt for choice in picking the 2011 centre pairing with Ones players Roods and Vlahos still around; and their back three will be handy also.

And then there are the two lightweight props. :D :D My word, I wouldn't let either of those lads anywhere near my fridge.
