for those too lazy to click link.

I know this question has been asked before, and I'm to lazy to find out!
But how are the ratings gathered? like I'm guessing the > 400 people at the pub I was at wouldn't count towards the pay tv ratings

I was at a friend's place who didn't have Fox.

Pretty much as soon as the game finished, they cut to Underbelly Razor.

You also barely saw a scrum as Channel 9 used scrums as an opportunity to go to an ad break.

That's a bit of an exaggeration on the scrums, and the cut to underbelly was expected. They did chop the news to go to the footy.

They've got to make money from showing the rugby, otherwise they wouldn't show it at all.

Shute Shield is on the ABC, just like the Bledisloe used to be!

that is true! but I would love it if we could get all of the games televised!! as unrealistic as it may be, it would truly provide leverage for more sponsorship, interest in rugby (i.e. up and coming players) ect

There was an international mix of commentators who did the minnow games, and Bray was one of them...

Channel 9 lost us the cup, that much is clear.
Wake up ARU and get this sport a profile on free to air, look at the figures that can be achieved.
SBS or Ch 10 for me

I didn't see the Channel 9 coverage, but from all reports it was rather bad. So imagine my amazement when I saw this..

NINE were so impressed with Ray Hadley's Rugby World Cup call they have virtually told him the job is his for all their future Wallabies fixtures.

Hadley was given short notice to cross the ditch and lend his voice to Sunday's semi-final between Australia and New Zealand. We were told Bolts's work ethic and professionalism prompted Nine bosses to say: "The job is yours if you want it."

Nine has the rights to all Wallabies games until the 2015 World Cup.

So channel 9 have all the rights to wallabies games till 2015, yet they get ray hadley in at the last minute to call the biggest game in years. And now say they are gonna keep him on for the next 4 years.

Why get the rights to something for 5 years and not organise a commentary team before hand? It is very strange. Ray Hadley said he couldn't believe how they rang out of the blue.

Weird shit going down there at 9.

They should get Adam Freier and Matt Burke to call the games.
Both good clear speakers, know the backs and the forwards and are funny (enough)

I just had a listen and it was horrible, not only does he not know the names of the players, positions, etc but he completely drowns out the other commentators and somehow the vision as well.
Only way to deal with this is to listen to the ABC radio but the digital feed I checked on Saturday night is like 60-90s later which'd be great if the Sony TV I have had live tv pause but it ain't - got 3 days to work something out.

I think its a cunning plot to get more people to buy foxtel.

I'm sorry but to get Hadley to call rugby is just wong

So everyone wants the game to broaden its appeal, but then criticises channel 9 for getting a commentator that provides exactly that broader appeal? If you want to appeal to an audience more familiar with NRL, a lot of that audience are going to be familiar with Ray Hadley.

Other than the fact that he was calling the game like he would for radio, I thought he was fairly tolerable. He would make a better radio commentator than those on ABC, to be honest. If he is going to be doing it for the next few years, I expect he'll perform better than he did with 5 days notice. The concept of Ray Hadley was worse than the reality. Gregan and Slack were pretty leaden though, I thought.

And remember, if the ARU sells off the free-to-air rights to Super Rugby separately to Pay TV, they will end up with a lot less money. Foxtel pay a lot, as far as I can tell, to be the exclusive home of Super Rugby - it drives a lot of subscriptions to the overall service and especially to the sports packages. If they lose that exclusivity, the amount they'll cut from their offer won't be matched by the token amount offered by a FTA network. And then everyone will whinge that the ARU isn't spending enough on grass-roots footy, or that we can't offer our top players enough to keep them in Australia.

I don't have Foxtel and would love to see Super Rugby on FTA regularly, but I think we're no closer to that than we were 10 years ago.

It'll just get closer to the UK model where Pay Tv is cheaper and everyone has it.

Give it time, but if subscriptions for foxtel go up enough the price will come down (sounds contrary i know but the more people subscribe the more they can afford to cut the price...they did this i the UK until they had total dominance of the market. now everyone has it). last month you could get free installation, basic package and sports package for $50 a month. a big discount to normal prices.
If it starts to get down to $30's a month, a lot more people will be getting it.

The NBN will also make it more viable in more places and potentially open up the market to competition which will also bring down the price.
