Slim you keep going on about poaching players, you will find that player managers are shopping there players around to Sydney clubs. If you think Robbie Deans is going to go to Canberra instead of going to Sydney or Brisbane to watch games you are living in a dream. He said a couple of years ago he will not look at players who are not playing in Sydney or Brisbane
Players in the future will decide if the decision to force players to play in Canberra against there wishes is a good decision by not going to play for the Brumbies if they have other options.
I know for a fact the club I am with has started discussing pushing there very good young players to other S15 franchises and not keeping the Brumbies in the loop regarding these players.Hope the Brumbies enjoy some poor seasons coming up but there local comp will be a bit better.

If any coach or selector in the national setup were to subscribe to this fanciful narrow mindset, then the Wallabies deserve to lose another 10 straight against the All Blacks.

And if players want to sacrifice their professional playing career to continue playing backyard rugby in Sydney, then that's their choice...

What is the whole club U10s? Grow up, you do realise there really is rugby outside of Sydney? If QLD, VIC or WA implemented the same program as Jake White has done I'd support that too. Stronger local comps is a positive which ever way you look at it; player development, community engagement, participation, crowds, sponsorships, etc.
these comps wont be stronger than sydney/brisbane no matter what happens - this will widen the gap between club rugby and s15 and will weaken s. 15

this moves us further away from an intermediate comp - I fully support such a comp, i think its vital to the long term health of our game.
Have 5 suburban comps trying to match Sydney/Brisbane (with its organic rugby demographic) dilutes the competition further.

The Canberra comp is not far behind Sydney and Brisbane...

The gap lies between 3 competitions and the one in Perth and Melbourne...

But the Dorce and Rebels are still supplying players tithe Shute Shield anyways...

Slim, Robbie Deans said he felt Sydney first grade was just below NPC 1 level and he wanted players who wanted to push for wallaby selection to play in Sydney or Brisbane so week in week out they were playing the better standard of rugby plus he lives in Sydney and it was easier for him to watch. How many people on this forum have seen Deans at Sydney games?? I bet a lot.
Why would Robbie Deans get on a plane and fly to Canberra every 2nd or 3rd week and watch a game when he can get the players to come to Sydney and watch them every week or 2 out of 3 weeks that way he can pretty much cover all clubs in about 5 or 6 weeks. The reason we don't beat the AB is because they are too good for us and we lose too many good players to league. We need a national club comp which won't happen so diluting the closest thing to an NPC comp is going to give our players the best opportunity to beat the AB'S ? Jake White has a 4 year deal so by year 3 the Brumbies will be called the BrumBoks and there will be 18 year old players with Du Pesse or Van Der in there names and Canberra people will be saying how great is this and the BrumBoks will have all the players who could not get a gig with other franchises because the ones with options don't want to be forced to play with clubs they don't want to play with. Players Wong forfeit the chance to play S15 because of club rugby but they will go to other franchises ahead of the Brumbies if they have this option.

Tahboy,

Robbie Deans once said we didn't need a backup 7...

And the Waratahs have more South Africans than the Brumbies currently

Deans did make the decision we didn't need a back up 7 and also took 3 number 9s just shows overseas coaches don't always make the smart decisions, hysterically speaking

Let's shift the goal posts even further...

Were you there in the 70s?

Maaaaan?
I was - how far back do you want to go. I think he is referring to the kookaburras of manuka oval fame when they represented the ACT in 1995 and were runners up.

This is personal too.
The poster was stating a fact not an opinion and he wasn't saying that he was implementing this response but that his club was - so why is he told to grow up?
Why would any club encourage, say, its colts players going to the Brumbies if the inevitable result of them succeeding would be that those players would be lost to the club: it makes no sense for them to do that. randwick used to be a brumbies pipeline - and they seem to be suggesting they have a gun colts outfit this year - why would randwick want to lose those players from their grade ranks if they could avoid it?
Love or hate Luke Burgess he built his test career on the back of a couple of seasons in Sydney while contracted to, but rarely playing for, the Brumbies. He was playing against the main competitors for his spot and he got his go at the tahs because of it - while contracted to the brumbies he couldnt get game time in UNis 1's, as I recall it. I doubt, but obviously cannot know, he would have played for Oz if this rule had been applied to him.
It would make a lot more sense for the Brumbies players to drop back to a Canberra based club that played in Sydney (and if that 1 club would be too strong for us then break them into 2) than for them to be lost in the Canberra comp.
Is there TV coverage of the Canberra comp?

I know...

I just think debate is becoming rather farcical, and some folks are becoming desperate in their cheap digs towards Canberra.

It's time for people to move on.

Agree 100% Leave Sydney in Sydney and get back to talking about how things are looking for the Ponies in 2012.

Does anyone know what the Brumbies are up to on the weekend of the 18th/19th Feb??
