I am disappointed to see the trend in colts of having as many as four fresh reserves on standby for the 1st grade team.

A team that has 4 fresh reserves will have 8 good players only getting about half a game. This is not a good thing for the players of that team, but if this tactic proves successful as it most likely will, then other teams will also feel that they will need to use fresh reserves also.

For example, how can Gordon justify having 2 fresh reserves for 1sts when their 2nds get beaten by 90 points. Surely it would have been better if those 2 players backed up after playing seconds.

And who wants to train hard all season, only to get half a game each week.

I agree it is simply frther evidence that club and school rugby continues to model themselves on the professional structures, talk is now of the match day 22 rather than the starting XV. At colts level you would like to think of all players benefiting from playing a full game in whatever grade is available, as you point out it is not as if Gordon 2nd Grade Colts is setting the world on fire - so is the club essentially saying we really only are interested in 1st Grade colts? Sad day for a club to take that view particularly in an U/20's competition.

When School 1st XV's start the practise of fresh reserves who havent played in a 2nd XV game prior we can safely assume we have the lost plot...

I'm interested. has this claim been generalised just because one team, Gordon, I assume, does it. I have seen 3 other teams in the first two rounds and from what I have seen all reserves for 1st colts come from the earlier colts grades i.e. no fresh reserves

We use to do it when I coached colts because of numbers. It sucked sometimes but when a lot of clubs have at least 60 players on their books, it means that at least 8 players cant play each week.

Parra have never over stated the numbers. Pre-season attendance was excellent, however they've dropped off significantly for varying reasons and this is now the club's biggest worry

I heard many of parra's colts went across to join Penrith, true or false?

VERY true. All the rooty hill/mt druitt based tongans and samoans left the day before the Uni trial to follow a coach. 1 got sent off in round one for a complete dog shot and another has been cited for kicking a player in the head.......3 times.

The incidents aren't a Parra or a Penrith thing. Rugby doesn't need those sorts of dickheads playing our game

I played for 28 seasons and never understood those sorts of dickheads (I don't care what club they come from). There are plenty of opportunities in our game to achieve a form of summary justice within, and respecting, the broader laws of the games.

1 they miss Tom conner & Terence Hepetema
2 their opponents played well and they were bad
They have had 6 props out
Otherwise no excuses that I have heard. They were better against Uni then fell away. Maybe they will improve however look off the pace at present

Whats going on at Gordon. Their seconds have lost 44 - 12 to the Rats, 90 - 3 to Randwick, 61 - 7 to Easts and 100 - 0 to Uni. Thats 22 for and 295 against. Somethings rotten in Denmark.

Any thoughts on that, and how does the 2012 standard compare?

Hard to comment on the standard in colts from one year to the next. I do sense this year the standard has dropped compared to 2011, with Norths and Uni the only clubs with strength throughout the three colts grades. This weekend should give more of an indicator whether Norths are the real deal, with Uni missing their three colts players who are off to South Africa. Most other clubs seem reasonably competitive in colts ones but the standard drops off quickly in the other two grades. The real test for clubs is at the back end of the season when injuries kick in and depth starts to become an issue. This is where Uni normally had the wood on other clubs.

Good call - there are more posts on the schoolboy sites.
I think the standard is the same as last year although I can't comment about previous years. There are many top athletes going around - top only beat the bottom (i.e. Norths over Randwick) by one lucky try.
There still still a stack of Rep players going around, and personally, I have found the footy quite entertaining.

Brogan was still on crutches last week. As is often the case the first out of school sees a rash of injuries as the training and trials intensity picks up and bodies are still growing.

He was injured a fair bit as a schoolboy as well, was he not?
