Dennis had a much better game as a player, but I still think he needs to work on his ref management to improve his captaincy. Watching the replay his interactions with the ref were a bit schoolboy, and I thought he came off sounding whiny.

I've heard the brumbies had Pocock working with a body language expert specifically for his dealings with the referee - maybe this is something the tahs should look at with Dennis

The shit they put on on game day is embarrassing. Tah man zipping around on a quaddie was sorta cringe worthy.
The talentless toss bag singing at half time was one more song away from getting my half filled bottle o coke to the back of his head.
Good on the lads for gettin the W.

Very well put, a comment I've been wanting to post for some time. Doesn't surprise me when the "General Manager Marketing & Commercial | Waratahs Rugby", doesn't respond to emails when advising ideas.
I also wish their attention to grass roots rugby would improve, focus on that and I'm sure the crowd will also improve.
Cheers

Halfback is still a problem as evidenced by the signing of Phipps. McKibben is not the answer long term. He's been given the opportunity to make the position his and hasn't. Lucas has a better passing game on yesterday's evidence and is able to get the team moving at speed more consistently. I find it difficult to understand how both halves gave 7 points to the Blues by not diving on the loose bouncing ball with their body. They each dived or slid at the ball and tried to grab it with their hands, and as rugby balls do, the balls bounced out of their grasp. This fundamental should have been addressed long before their arrival in professional rugby. If any position on the field is going to be able to get back to a loose bouncing ball with the opposition pouring through, it is at half.

You've pinned the first try unfairly on McKibbin. With the structure they've been taking on defensive lineouts, Mitchell has been standing up where the hooker would regularly stand. When Timani won the lineout against the throw it was actually Mitchell who swept back to secure the ball and missed it costing us a try. McKibbin had nothing to do with that error.

As barbarian said a couple of posts above, McKibbin played his best football of the season in the 20 minutes before he left the field injured. He had two passes in the backline move for Mitchell's try and both of them were crisp and out the front of the man. It was a much improved effort from him compared to previous games this season.

Lucas made a really poor choice when he kneed the ball and the Blues scored. The ball was still bouncing so sliding into it was always going to be a poor decision. He had to stay on his feet and just try and pick it up on the run. He made it much harder for himself by sliding into a bouncing ball and once he was off his feet, he game himself no options if he made a mistake (which is obviously what eventuated).

The kids love tahman. I have learned to tolerate him and can't see how his presence or otherwise has a big impact on crowd numbers.

Didn't Mitchell duff a great opportunity in the first half. He was in the clear with only one in front in the middle of the field and with Lucas in support, but he angled sideways so Lucas had no room and the play was shut down.

Does anyone have a line out stat on timani?

Interesting to hear people's thoughts on the ref. I had the sports ears in, and I have never heard a ref talk so little, both to the players and to his TJs. The language barrier also looked to be an issue- at one point the touchie called 'four white offside' and the ref blew up a forward pass ('four white' = forward I think). Instead of a Tahs penalty, it was a Blues scrum.

I didn't think he had a great game decision-wise either. Too lenient at ruck time, too slow with the cards. Missed key things that lead to tries- Rene Ranger's steal before Piutau's try was clearly illegal, and Lucas' pass to Folau was clearly forward.
.

Plus the return to the bad old days of the wildly varying pause in the scrum engagement.

Scoring off the first phase from a lineout in the opposite corner was particularly great. Superbly executed backline move.

Definite Randwick style rugby. Shows that Gaffney is having an impact after being squeezed out last year.

It was McKibbon or Foley I think, but yeah, that could have been close to a try otherwise. Just bad luck in the line Drew running and the space the support man had closing at the same time.

All in all that was actually exactly what the Tahs needed. A win, people actually off their seats clapping and hugging etc etc.

Out lineout is shit. Thank god paddy Ryan is stepping up. Fat cat is half the player he used to be (but double the size!)

Well, they did have a junior match on at half-time as well as the singer, and an inter-state club match curtain-raiser, and a fan day, and players meeting the crowd after the match, and as others have said, Tah Man is king of the kids. Can you specify what more they should do to prevent your embarassment?

Again I thought Kingston looked good for his time off the bench. We have a logjam of goodies at 11/14. Bad news for Turner, but maybe if AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) needs to be rotated he might get a chance at 13.

I've been to 90% of the home games for the last 3 or 4 years since moving home from Canada. The Waratahs are massively lifting their game this season in terms of the activities and entertainment.

I'm not saying that criticism of the team, its fan engagement or its match-day stuff is out of bounds -- talk about what you like. But it shits me that no matter how much better things get, some find it impossible not to bellyache about something.

one thing that has gone backwards is they changed the girl who runs the passing game at the front of the stadium.

Chieka did his 'nana around the 22 minute mark and ran down to the sidelines having words to someone on the field. I thought it was directed at the Tahs, but now realise it was probably at match officials. Never seen a coach run down from the coaches box and have a go like that.
I was sitting nearby as Cheika came down to the fence. He gave the match doctor a big spray and he had everyone in the area transfixed with his performance. I didn't catch every word but the phrase "got them on the f***ing ropes" stuck in my memory.

I think this is pretty shit. It wouldn't be tolerated if he did this to a ref or an AR - why should it be OK to do to the match doctor?

I don't necessarily think Cheika blasting the doctor is the most appropriate thing to do but I also think the doctor got it completely wrong.

If he thought a drinks break was essential then he should have insisted on it prior to the game when the referee/captains/coach had a discussion and agreed to having no drinks breaks.

It is not like there was a dramatic change in the weather or anything. Once the game had started with the decision to have no drinks break, that shouldn't have been changed.

Game Day Management at the SFS
I have been an opponent of the Twit on the PA "NEW ......SOUTH....WALES" and the what appears to be compulsory live band as well as a DJ to fill in those quiet periods.

It is possibly part of our culture that there must be something noisy going on at all times. Silence is not seen as a time where people are perhaps reflecting or thinking, but a time where there must be noise generated to keep the punters thought processes "on message" as it were. Can't have individual thoughts now can we.

Anyhoo, the only way to defeat them is to continually make more noise spontaneously, think Barmy Army chants, Welsh singing, Argie raucousness, etc. If we can't be bothered making the necessary noise as a crowd, then I guess we get what we deserve, and the game day managers will continue to fill the stadia with their own noise if the crowds are not doing so. Up to us in the end.

Regarding singers and Bands at the Footy. If I wanted to hear a band or live music, I'd go to a live music venue, and when I am there I don't expect to see the footy on a big screen.

I don't know how much they pay these "entertainers" at the rugby, but if it isn't unpaid volunteer work than IMHO they are taking money that could be spent on the Grass Roots.

Apart from the Music and the PA Bloke (and fortunately he only fired up once IIRC), I think the rest of the game day stuff yesterday was pretty well handled.

The half time mini rugby is awesome, but the bloody singer took all the attention away from the little'uns running around.

Playing at half time at the SFS for these kids is as important to them as if they were personally in a RWC final - a kiddy bucket list thing. This stuff keeps kids (and families involved in Heavensgame) and there should be more of it.

Crowd numbers were a little disappointing, but using the “If you build it, they will come” philosophy, word will spread that the boys are playing better, more entertaining footy, and winning a few tight games. The fickle Sydneysiders will come.

Starter plays are excellent. Very sharp setting some excellent targets for next few phases. We just don't work hard/well on phase 2-4. And the lost lineouts in the first half are a disgrace.
