Good luck to both sides, can't believe Waratahs not there but full credit to the Rebels. Reds u20s undefeated however that means nothing coming into grand final. Should be a great game!

The Melbourne Rebels U20s have name their 23-player team for Sunday’s Super 20s Championship Grand Final against the minor premiers Queensland Reds U20s at Ballymore, Brisbane.

The Rebels have made just three changes to the run-on team that went down to the Brumbies U20s 44-21 in last weekend’s final round at AAMI Park with Will Clift, Sunia Finefeuiaki and Ah-Mu Tuimalealiifano included in the starting lineup.

Clift and Finefeuiaki have been named in the locks while Tuimalealiifano returns to the left wing for the decider.

The visitors will feature Rebels squad members Harley Fox and Sione Tuipulotu, who made his Super Rugby debut against the Reds in Round 3 at AAMI Park.

The 2016 Super 20s Championship Grand Final between the Queensland Reds U20s and Melbourne Rebels U20s will be streamed live at www.rugby.com.au from 2.00pm (AEST).

As expected Reds take the chocolates quite convincingly by 35 -5.

A final is always a tense affair and this was no real exception, but I feel that Vic played their Final against NSW.

Reds were far too composed for the Vics and played a far more disciplined game that offered few chances for the Rebels to pounce upon.

Sad thing is, based on the tapes on youtube, I reckon that the scoreline would have been similar if NSW had played in the final today. The Oz team will be rightly full of QLD players, but yet I didn't see much to convince me that we have much of a chance at Junior World Cup.

The games have been more in the Schoolboy space than the Semi-Pro space, and teams like the Saffers and The Darkness will take us apart at Jnr RWC like a Sailor on a 48 hour furlough from an operational deployment in the Gulf takes attacks their first slab and kebab.

Coach Thompson has a difficult job in front of him. Good luck.

Well done Red's. A thoroughly deserved victory.

To those selected for Gold, Work hard, stay fit, and listen to your coaches. There is a mountain still to climb.

Keen to see who has been named in the extended training squad, I'd expect to see QLD being well represented

I'm sure Thomo has already his side on paper, it will just be a matter of combining them in a camp or two for the Oceania games in May.

A bunch of the top performers in the Force, Brumbies and NSW were called in for medicals last week. No official word on selections, but if someone knew enough of the boys and asked around, I think they have a good idea who's 'in', from their own squads.

That may be a short list, especially if they selected on Curtain Raiser Cup performances, rather than Schoolboy rugby CV and "reputation".

You'd reckon probably 12-15 Banana benders with 6-8 or so starters (chief among them Mason, Tuttle, Tui, Magnay and Mafi) then an assortment of other players from the other States for a combination of depth and better individuals. For mine, from the Rebels players, an assortment of Uelese, Fox, Hosea, Fowler, Tuipulotu and Ah-Mu Tumalealiifano (sp?), with Josh Coward being a bit light on at this stage.

Well HJ, you'd probably assume the Rebels and Gen Blue are at about the same level... Gen Blue second of five teams on the round robin table - same points as the Rebels and only ahead of the Rebels by a fors and againsts difference of 2 or 3 points only, and not in the final because the Rebels defeated Gen Blue head to head. Fair enough result, but means they are pretty much on par with each other on balance.

So, while they weren't great, and most are disappointed with their performance v Rebels, we are judging them against past performances. They weren't any worse than the Rebels overall. I reckon they would have had a similar result in Brizzy today, though it occurs to me the backs might have been smoked.

So, I'd expect more of the NSW piggies to get picked for the extended squad than their princesses. The forwards had the Rebels by the short and curlies and monstered their scrums. It was the backs - almost exclusively - who dropped ball after ball, fell off tackles, let the Rebels sweep around past their flanks with relative ease, and gave away two intercept tries.

You might expect mostly Reds in the extended, with a smattering of largely Gen Blue piggies and some Rebels backs, plus one or two from Brumbies and Force to provide credible hope for future Aus 20s aspirants.

^^I concur, although Jack Maddocks did stand out for the Hairdressers in the tapes I saw, and many of the "name" NSW piggies had poor ball security in contact, carried too high, and were relatively soft at the breakdown.

When is the squad announcement due to be made?

From the ARU.

Following the conclusion of the domestic U20s season the BMW Australia U20s squad for the Oceania Rugby U20s Championship will be picked in April.

The young Aussie side will take on the New Zealand U20s in two Junior Bledisloe clashes at Bond University, Gold Coast on Tuesday 3 May and Saturday 7 May.

The Australians will then finalise their preparations for the World Rugby U20s Championship in Manchester this June.

Yep, Jack was good value.
According to a post from Lee Grant* some months back, a squad announcement is due some time this week.

* which reminds me - Lee has been extremely quiet/absent from the forums and blogs these last 2-3 weeks. Is he okay - does anyone know?

Given that it is currently April, and the Aust U20's will be playing a match against The Darkness on 3 May, it doesn't take the brains of a Rocket Surgeon to work out that the team will be picked in April, nor that they will finalise preparations for a June tournament after they play a couple of games in early May.

Good thoughts about the Gen Blue and Rebels likely selections, but why so condascending of the Brumbies Colts who lost to Gen Blue and had a convincing win over the Rebels? Surely an argument exists for somewhat equal representation by all three sides after the Reds?

I have it in mind that the Colts forwards were as strong, or stronger, than the other packs, and there are at least three backs in Jooste, Jackson-Hope and Kotz who must be in the mix.
