Schools that screen on sporting prowess and offer places to gifted kids ‘in those areas’ tend to have lower academic results. It’s a fairly uncontroversial ‘data backed’ observation isn’t it? Once again, it’s interesting to see how Kings seem to be sustaining results in rugby/athletics/ rowing...

Most schools offer ~20 academic and music scholarships per year to keep ATAR results high. It shows through in numbers when you go beyond that for sports.

Great to hear, the kings boys I’ve come across were some of the most respectful I’ve encountered, glad to see the success hasn’t gone to ‘most’ of their heads ;-)

Kings seem to be winning alot of sport and keeping up their academic results (other than the warm glow of success) what’s the culture like on the ground out there?

He did, it’s why the story stood out. Not sure how prolific it is without the data, but it made me think how many inorganic players there are in an average 1XV team. I think 3 or 4 players could really make a difference year on year and is still more or less in line with the AAGPS charter, if...

Seems like we both understand how to assess a credible story and the tenets of basic interrogation. I must say a psych degree and 5 years of investigative interviewing helped me a bit, but you weren’t to know that. Scepticism is healthy, but outright denial also lacks credibility. All the best.

The guy I spoke to was actually very humble, not an ounce of hubris, he was speaking the truth. I’m sorry if that makes you feel uncomfortable.

It’s not based on nothing, I was speaking to a dad at a game in 2006 and he mentioned his boy was approached by the school. Much to the dads ‘financial’ disappointment he didn’t want to move. From the inside no one would have known. but it’s not something to get too offended by or upset either...

I think a balanced discussion would include both how schools attract/select talent and how they are coached. I’m sure Joeys rugby coaching is first class and all respect in the world to the boys and teachers as they persue excellence. Some GPS schools coaching is a little lose lower down (like...

You’re right, he was a year ahead of me, must have been 1992. Shame he went to league, would have been one of the great wallabies.

Really? We can speak openly about Newington’s cross code talent attraction but not Joeys methods? My sources are intergenerational, from players, students and teachers, so I’m happy with the fact base. As far as I’m concerned there’s no shame or glory In the approach, so it’s a weird line to try...

If we did an audit of who ‘only won premierships’ without scholarships of this nature, you’d find it would be a very short list. Joeys has always been a Marist college collective side and other schools have recently (in the last 35 years) joined the scholarship arms race which ended up...

Some genuine curiosity here about how some other schools go about their recruitment strategies, any insights form people with knowledge about how the various programs go about selection of day boys or boarders and or their scholarship programs? How many boys end up in the 1st XV or otherwise and...
