QLD Colts 2024

The Filth are favourites every year …. just ask them!

They always recruit well and have depth in there squads with players returning from Reds U18’s duties from earlier in the year mixed in with some new recruits from the UK. They’ll be in the mix again this year for sure.
I think this year their arrogance may be their downfall….

Bad news out of UQ this year with a lot of players and coaches leaving the club as they are unsatisfied with the new coaching staff this year. A few players have quit altogether or transferred clubs - as well as some coaches leaving or not wanting to come back due to the stated toxic environment. Not good signs coming from a usually strong club, especially in Round 1. Will be interesting to see how Norths will treat UQ after their positive win against Souths. Word is going around, keep an eye on this space.

Heard something similar from one of their new recruits this season

How much of it is down to there being 200+ colts at UQ this year with not a lot of gametime to go around? I know they hired that NSW academy guy that's big on social media but wasn't aware of any other big changes.

colt numbers looking strong across the comp - game might be dying professionally but participation from school leavers is off the charts and hopefully it helps moving forward with a stronger QPR competition down the track

Two rounds in and this years Colts 1 competition just might be the most evenly contested for a long time. Bonus points will be very important in the race for a top 4 spot which makes for a very exciting year!

If the QRU would put a cap on numbers for each club it would make the competition more even and give the players more game time.

There's more to the conversation than just the competition and game time. 19 year olds like playing with their mates, some kid coming from Kingaroy to study at UQ and staying at one of the colleges is probably not going to stay with the QPR colts competition if you tell him he has to go train at Bond, Sunnybank, or Norths instead of with guys he knows at UQ a 5 min walk away.

It's an interesting problem.

Yeah, I don't think we're in any position as a game to be turning players away or risking losing them in an attempt to force talent distribution. Would be great if there was more that could be done to draw players into the clubs with fewer colts coming through, but it has to be via incentives rather than penalties/restrictions.

I saw Tuqiri has been named in the Tuggeranong Vikings premier grade team off the bench this weekend

I wonder if he picked up some form of contract with the brumbies?

Yeah. I had mentioned that a while ago. He was being courted. Must have been finalised. Big step up into first grade.

Early days but looks like a very competitive Colts competition this year. No standouts at this stage, which is very unusual. Brothers normally the measuring stick have started the year slowly. Looking forward to the next few weeks to see who the favourites might be.

Or Souths just better
That they were and Norths better than Souths on season opening day too - Norths well drilled forwards were impressive against a solid Bank colts today whose backline defended well and basically thwarted Norths impressive backline. Pretty good tight game.
