Sydney Subbies 2025

Renegades v Maccabi
Epping v Redfield
Raptors v Valley

3 from 3.

We tied it up with a try on the bell and then knocked over the conversion for the win!

Epping and Redfield traded blows up until halftime then Redfield found the edges and used pace.

Raptors v Valley had 2 red cards to the hosts. Interesting to see what those were - listed as illegal tackling. Looks like they were late in the game according to the sheet

Any feedback on the Breakers? Didn’t see that coming at all… off day for the Dirties… always tough down there at the beaches

2s, 3s and 4s tight struggles that could of gone either way but fell to the good guys today. 1sts and Colts solid victories with plenty of spice in 1s after a mid 2nd half red for a high shot really riled up the crowd.
Breakers defence in both grades was impressive.

good to see some clubs such as Kings and Chatswood with multiple teams. Kings fielded a Halligans cup game in addition to the grade and colts. We need all these former big clubs to keep growing and push for the Div 2 rebuild.

i think a few of them arent coming back, pethybridge i believe is doing a 2nd season in europe and not returning, williams is back to parra, tuituou is nowhere to be found, although played tonga 7s and is internationally capped now for tonga, so why would you go back to subbies, surely someone, somewhere around the world will offer you something once your nationally capped? the other 3-4 who are in holland for them should be back though in 4-5 weeks im guessing, roache, slade etc, they will be really handy to come back in and drive the team forward.

briars will be good i think

Mosman Will get up over Lindfield off the back of the Eastwood recruits + veterans.

Drummoyne to welcome Newport to the big boy leagues with a win.

Colleagues will start the year off strong with a win against Hunters.

Waverley to have a tight win over Blueys
1.5 / 4 poor tipping , missed the mark heavily with colleagues & Drummoyne

I think you're pretty on the money with those - we lost Sam Tuitupou to a Tonga call-up during Grand Final week which probably made a difference compared to the major semi the fortnight prior.

We had some great talent in the squad last season that, rightly, drummed up a bit of noise and have gotten attention elsewhere. Hard to blame them, they're all young and have been offered chances to travel around the world playing the sport they love.

As much as I'd love to see all those blokes put on the gold jersey again, I'm happy to see them carrying our flag in some way elsewhere and they'll always be a part of our story.

Did I see correctly that LCOI put out two Colts sides for games over the weekend? Going with two full grade sides is a good sign if they can get enough of the young blokes to stay around for a few seasons.

Great week back at Rugby. Looking at the footage - Seems like Drummoyne were missing some numbers from the rumoured recruitment. HH looked strong again against another rumoured club that recruited well. Waverley and Blueys played out a really good see sawing battle. While Mosman benefitted from the influx of Eastwood players.
The main issue, did Lindfield forget to pay their Groundsman? Surely someone has some contacts to get the grass looking like @Pfitzy's field of dreams instead of a back paddock in Richmond.

Didn't get my Div 3 tips in last week, blame Anzac Day... but I think I would have picked all 3 this week, might've given Hornsby a go, guess we'll never know...

Knox 12 def. LCOI 5: Watched the tape on this one, a bit of an odd game. Knox blew a lot of chances in the first 60 or so but then were lucky to escape with a win at all as LCOI came home strong. Much closer than most would have picked. Worrying signs from Knox at home though, they'll need to be MUCH better hosting Beecroft next week.

Beecroft 64 def. Old Barker 12: 2 vastly different stories here. 2 weeks in and Barker are on life support, no second grade and two drubbings at home - and a clash with a Hills outfit that's firing on all cylinders early awaits. Beecroft on the other hand look like the real heavyweights in this competition. A good litmus test on the road at Lofberg next week.

Hills 39 def. Hornsby 20: A tough welcome to Div 3 for the Hornsby lads with two sizeable losses, though they appeared to improve this week setting up an interesting clash vs LCOI in week 3. Hills look the part to contend this year, some big units in the tight 5 and a skillful backline. They should make light work of Old Barker this week.

Looked like it could use a trim but would have been nice to land on ;)

The problem is always the turf square of course. You try to do the right thing by the outfield in rugby terms, but the grass on that square isn't going to stand up to winter conditions unless a good 2-3 weeks of oversowing followed by rest occurs.

Does anyone know how double points will work in the event of a washout in the first half of the season in a 6 team comp - ie where you play everyone 3 times instead of 2?
I believe it's just the next time the sides play it's worth double. So if the first match is off, they play for double match 2 then again for normal points match 3. A double call off into a triple points showdown for all the marbles would be electric television...

Looking like a wet old week in Sydney. Moreso on the coast - across Tuesday to Friday:

30-60mm predicted for Mosman - chance of rain per day varies from 70-90%
15-35mm at Epping 70-80%
5-25mm at Kellyville 60-80%

Let's see how generous Councils are feeling! The week after this it stops for a couple of days on current forecast.

Does anyone know if the dedicated BYEs on the Lions tour saturdays double as wet weather rounds or they're full on byes? Or is that team discretion around when they reschedule to? Not calling anything so far out but reading the tea leaves and it doesnt look good!

Yep it was a ripper of a game and an outstanding result. LCOI played in tight the first half then let it sing in the second half with some deft chips and kicks to gain territory.
Lads were chasing the scoreboard the majority of the game and were down 14-7 with less than 5 to go and scored+converted to even things up.
With less than 2 minutes ran from just outside their 22m to score an unconverted try to win 19-14.

Honestly not that far away from having the numbers for a grade Haligans side, however this would come at the expense of fresh bench players.
However not sure if the powers that be within the club would want to sacrifice the fresh benches and being early in the season injuries/ski trips are low at the moment.

Fresh benchies are great, but if you can get a Halligan game going they're only playing 25 minute halves anyway, so hardly taxing except for old bastards like me ;)

My understanding was that they were dedicated byes with the aim of making sure the rugby community could enjoy the test series but I'm sure they will pivot if needs must.

Re: double points - this will be interesting where clubs play H-A-H or A-H-A. Hopefully some common sense will prevail so if the middle leg is a washout you switch the 3rd leg to the other ground or you could have 3x home or away games points-wise.

When have we known common sense to be used in Subbies? Clubs will be loving the option to not have to travel to certain clubs home grounds and the board normally stays out of these matters
