Not quite sure where to put this, but Mike Tindall's breakaway R360 is getting some press. They are targetting the top 300 players for a touring set of matches

R360 is unapologetically attempting to recruit “the best of the best” and, crucially, have promised that its players will remain available for all international fixtures, allowing them to continue to represent their countries. With windows from April to June and then August to September, R360 explicitly wants to turn rugby into a summer sport and to give the game “its Super Bowl moment”. It is hoping to launch the competition in September next year and expand to 10 male franchises in its second year.

LOLL. What fun tuning in to watch allegiance-challenged mercenaries like Charles Piutau etc mail it in for the Bangalore Boofheads vs the Abu Dhabi Jihadis in an utterly empty 100k max capacity stadium in motherfucking Singapore.

"...promised that its players will remain available for all international fixtures, allowing them to continue to represent their countries."

I confidently predict that unless WR (World Rugby) & the member Unions thereof are getting a cut the comp won't be sanctioned & the players will effectively be banned under the various eligibility rules & regs that apply to National selection.

The only way this sort of thing can take off in my view is if the money offered to players is so great that players jump ship and World Rugby (and other leagues) are forced to recognize it and make it work in the calendar. It has to effectively be to rugby what the IPL is to cricket.

As rugby is a contact sport and serious injuries are part of the game I don't think it would work even if the money offered was very good for the time required but still only amounted to the minority of a player's annual salary. If I'm the main employer I'm not going to allow my employee to play given the likelihood of losing them to injury for your season.

It looks unlikely it will be for the Men's game, but it could be a big disrupter in the women's game. Maybe not too significant;y at first with only 4 teams, but with only a few truly professional comps around the world it could be a huge boost for just about any player but the English stars. Women's 7s in particular might suffer, with the players there having more profile and World Rugby not really sure what to do with the format.

The amount of money would have to be pretty large to get anyone to leave their club contract (they want to play through April-June which would mean they are in direct competition for players with almost every league.

Top 300 players x $1,000,000 (?) average wage per year to attract the players starts getting to an eye-wateringly large number very quickly

Apparently they've been knocked back by "several high-profile Australian players" already:
With contracts expiring this year, several high-profile Australian players were made offers to sign with R360 for substantial sums, but on contracts that would only take effect if the competition had enough funding to launched next year. With the 2027 Rugby World Cup on the horizon, the Australian players did not accept.
