    CAS Rugby 2022

Actually, competitions need to be managed better than this. But you know my views on that subject.

It would also give the boys better memories of Rugby. Let's face it, 90% of kids who play Rugby at school never play afterwards. But if they have positive memories of the game, they become the next generation of supporters, who turn up at games, support the Waratahs, encourage their kids to...

Well, it's also the reason why Newington fields fewer teams than many other GPS schools.

    CAS Rugby 2022

I assume that GPS has reverted to home-and-away because its competition was relatively even this year. But it's bad news for the CAS. With the greatest of respect for St Aloysius, Knox would gain more by losing (say) 27-29 to St Josephs than by beating St Aloysius 89-7 twice in a season...

Well, I was there, and I promise you that Papadopoulos and Savvides and Heliodoniotis and Velios and Pavlides all preferred soccer. There were, of course, boys from Greek backgrounds who played Rugby, but they were far outnumbered by the soccer players who wanted to play the code they grew up with.

I'll bore people who have been here a while if I repeat my views on this. However.... I'm not sure that the CAS needs to do any more than it already does to "support Rugby". Most schools provide excellent facilities and coaching. What's missing in some schools is the player numbers. There...

I understand that Alex Sherlock of Knox scored again yesterday. That means he has become only the sixth player to score a try in every round of the CAS competition. The list is: Try in each round of the competition 1947 N Hayes, Waverley (2 v St Aloysius, 3 v Barker, one v Knox, one v...

Ah, Waverley too good, is the tip. Trinity will be OK. They had their chances against Cranbrook, but made too many unforced errors and aren't always good at converting their chances into points. I suspect a reasonably close first half with Waverley running away with the back end of the game.

I played in that game. On the winning side, which was embarrassing. Contrary to rumours, the referee didn't actually penalise Cranbrook for running with the ball, but he came close.

    CAS Rugby 2022

I'm sure it's a joke. However (reaches for the history book) the Trinity Plume Shield-winning 1st XV captain of 1935 was Horrie Marks, a half back who was playing in his fifth year of 1st XV football, at a time when there were only five years of secondary school, so he played 1st XV in what...

There's history there. No one who played in the 16As Trinity/Cranbrook game in 1978 will forget it. Trinity won 6 (two penalties) to 4 (a try). The penalty count was 33-4 to Trinity. The referee was... the son of the Trinity coach. Couldn't happen today. Probably.

And - sorry Mike! - Mike Cleary also scored ten tries in five games in 1957 (including four in a game twice).

OK, so, fun with records: Knox's 89 points against St Aloysius was its biggest 1st XV score ever in a CAS competition game but not its highest ever margin of victory - Knox beat St Aloysius 86-0 in 2016. Knox's Alex Sherlock became the first player ever to end a CAS game with six tries and he...

So, for the records nerds, the Knox score yesterday was the second-highest ever recorded in the competition's history. Scorers aren't posted yet so unclear whether any individual records were challenged. If Bourgeois scored again, he will have scored four times in four games, needing to dot...

    CAS Rugby 2022

One for the records nerds: Samuel Bourgeois of Knox has scored a try in each of the first three rounds. In the 93 years of the competition, only five players have scored a try in every round. You'd probably back him to get over the line against St Aloysius next week.
