Maybe we have to develop an Australian game instead of trying to copy NZ.

Once we work out what that game looks like, then develop the coaching and development programmes (including those for the Koala Clubs) to support that game.

Stop trying to out-Kiwi the Kiwis. There has been a time (and in the professional era as well) when we had the measure of them, and they would be genuinely concerned about the outcome whenever we had possession of the ball in a close game.

Bring back the good old days. They were good and not all that old.

The Incredible Plan

Herbert Moran (7)
My observation would be that they teach the basics from an early age, keep teaching them and never stop honing them ( look at the crusaders warm up) - the patterns and nuanced skills you then build on top of that platform define your style of rugby. A couple of the kiwi super rugby tries resulting from catch, draw and pass last weekend - canes and highlanders - are an example of how simple and beautiful it can be. Reckon you can trace that skill and awareness back to consistent and persistent junior rugby coaching.

With most of todays backlines full of seagulling fatties, why not throw the big double/triple cut to keep the ball in the hands of the fast boys?

Will we ever revert to a game where you can throw a blanket over 6 slow fat buggers who grind the ball up 1 metre at a time, leaving the other 45 metres of the width of the paddock as free space for the 7 fast undernourished pretty boys to showcase their wares?

I like to watch

David Codey (61)
Pfft, now we have fatties wanting to throw the cut 3 passes!
Saw a colts game recently, first clearing kick of the day was by a prop.

@ILTW, You know what needs to be done after that sort of effort, and I hope you done so by reporting this inappropriate behaviour to the Appropriate Regulatory Body - The Cauliflower Club.

For the overall good of the game, fatties need to learn to behave as such, otherwise there will eventually be no place for the weak and undernourished in our wonderful game.

Inside Shoulder

Nathan Sharpe (72)
HJ - when was the last time you saw an AB in any position who couldn't do the basics?
It wasn't Deans job to up skill the well paid wallabies.
It isn't even Cheika's.
It needs to happen long before these blokes are seen anywhere near that sort of level.
I'm not advocating playing the NZers at their own game - but i don't think it matters much what structure or style you want to play there are certain universal fundamentals and we are not good at them.

You do get the feeling, across the board, that Coaches (and players) are focused on drills, not skills.

Consequently we get a form of lower risk robot/rote rugby. Still far better than loig, but rote rugby none the less.

You and I have been in heated agreement elsewhere that it is at Under 11-Under 14's level that these basic skills are learned. In many respects the kids are well behind the 8 Ball trying to learn basic tackle, body height, catch, kick from hand, catch and pass skills as a 15-18 year old.

Maybe we don't need to put our U16 Rockstars into rugby nurseries, but think about throwing resources into teaching basics to the Under 10 - Under 14 age group. Ignore the nurseries, the Private Schools arms race, aspirational Colts Programmes and a targeted representative rugby programme at key age groups will make sure that the cream rises to the top on "the Pathway".

Jimmy Flynn (14)
A lot of those skills were learnt in the backyard before computers were around. Look back at how many hundreds of hours we played touch footy honing catch pass and draw skills

SCRIBES WANTED

Who is going along to the National Festival of Youth Rugby ( AKA the Schoolboy champs) at Riverview from 30 June?

While all teams are yet to be finalised, and this may determine which Gaggerlanders (particularly those from interstate) turn up to watch the games, there are some rusted on tragics who will be there regardless.

At this time of the year, things get rather busy for the glue that holds G&GR Schoolboy Forums together, @Lee Grant, especially considering that there are numerous games (including Div 2 games) to cover for our national audience.

G&GR exists for the users and is produced by the users. The staff of G&GR get zip. What little sponsors product there is ( and I might add that Vale Ale is a mighty fine brew, and you should try and get your hands on some) gets consumed by @Gagger with none heading towards the Northern Beaches hideaway of G&GR's own @Lee Grant.

A job shared is a job halved, or something like that. There will be plenty of top games of footy to write up.

Are there any volunteers out there in Gaggerland that are prepared to put 200 words or so together on a game to help Uncle Lee out with the blog report for the day?

You just need to record the points scorers, and along with a sentence or two on how the game unfolded and you are almost there. Bonus points for providing a summary of stand out players, and identifying the key moment/s of the match.

If you are unable to do that, then any good action photographs of the day would be welcome.

Who is up for the challenge?

Send a "conversation" to @Lee Grant or myself to volunteer your services. They will be welcomed.

We are particularly keen to get input from our interstate (ACT, QLD, VIC and WA) visitors.
