Australian Bid for 2027 World Cup

There has been a bit of talk in the media about the Australian bid for the 2027 World Cup.

Unions have to express their intention by the end of the month and so far no teams apart from Australia have formally announced their interest.

Rugby Australia will launch its 2027 World Cup bid on Thursday morning with the promise of a $2.5 billion boost to the economy and more than two million attendees, plus a brand new national rugby museum, potentially in Circular Quay, where the country’s most important memorabilia can be displayed.

RA says the 2027 event would attract more than two million attendees across 48 matches held over seven weeks at “eight to 10 venues”. It is hoped 200,000 international visitors will flock to Australia and contribute roughly $2.5 billion of “direct and indirect expenditure” to the economy.

RA’s vision is for “maximum revenue, minimum risk” and wants to create a legacy for not only Australia but the Pacific region.

I hope we are successful, the crowds that RA are suggesting comes to 41,667 people at each game.

In theory, RA is only up against one bid at the moment: Russia. However, they are precluded from bidding for major sporting events until the end of 2022 by a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling, which is punishment for systemic doping.
The United States has indicated it is keen for 2031, but could they try for four years earlier?
If Russia or the US signed a blank cheque for though, it’s pretty hard for World Rugby to turn that down. World Rugby’s primary objective is money, as we saw when France swooped late to knock off South Africa for the 2023 World Cup.
There are so many advantages to having the World Cup in Australia and the marquee tournament needs to come back to the southern hemisphere. It will be 16 years since New Zealand hosted it in 2011, with the tournaments in between having been hosted by England, Japan and then France in two years’ time.
As for 2031, you’d have to consider the US to host its first World Cup. That’s a logical step. The football World Cup was in the US in 1994 and the code has retained a really strong presence in that country. The growth rugby could see in the US is astronomical.

If WR (World Rugby) go northern hemisphere again I say we break off and start our own World Rugby, but with blackjack and hookers.

Genuinely though Derpus, if we lose the bid to the USA or Russia then you'd talk seriously about a SANZAAR breakaway. Especially after what happened to South Africa in the bid for 2023.

You don't want to put the mockers on it, but it's really hard to see us losing the bid at the present time. And it's so critical to the future of the game in this country, we need to pull out all the stops. I'm talking taking delegates on free trips to Aspen, paper bags full of cash, unfettered access to the suites at Bankwest Stadium....... anything goes.

The US isn't in the running for 2027. USA Rugby isn't in the position to bid. And the only group that could and is interested (MLR) has stated they are targeting a 2031 bid.

Might need to build some No Panties Restaurants to win over the Japanese delegation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-pan_kissa

Maybe some duffel bags stuffed with high-end electric toothbrushes for the pommy delegation.

World Rugby rules stipulate that a Rugby World Cup final must be held at a stadium with 60,000 or more seats, which rules out the 52,000-capacity Suncorp Stadium. Australia’s bid team are looking at Optus Stadium in Perth, Stadium Australia in Sydney and the MCG - the only three arenas in the country that fit World Rugby’s criteria.

Officials are seriously weighing up Perth as an option. The Wallabies beat the All Blacks 47-26 at a sold-out Optus Stadium in 2019 and, while Stadium Australia (83,500) and the MCG (100,000) are bigger, RA believes Perth provides a better time zone for important UK and France television audiences.
The 2003 World Cup final was held in Sydney at 8pm (AEDT), which was mid-morning in the northern hemisphere.

More than a dozen venues were used for the 2003 World Cup in Australia, but World Rugby has cut that number down for financial reasons. Between eight and 10 will be used in 2027.
No venues are confirmed at this stage, but Sydney will be hoping Stadium Australia, the new Sydney Football Stadium and Bankwest Stadium are on the list of venues.

Perth would be an interesting option, and depending on where international travel is in 2027 it could be a way to ensure massive tourism within Australia, I am sure many people from the Eastern States would cross the country to watch the final.

I wonder if the Brisbane Olympic stadium proposal can be increased to 60,000 instead of 50,000 to secure the final?

Interesting times ahead.

I'm confused why there is talk of sharing a few games with New Zealand, i don't think that should be part of the bid at all!

Naa that was just something Hamish said on NZ tv last year, anyone who is dumb enough to believe that is pretty gullible, he's a PR man, and says what sounds good at time
. There is no way Aus should or will send any to NZ , it can be run plenty good enough over there.

Weren't they looking at expanding to 24 teams for 2027?

Honestly keep it at 12 venues if they do (except maybe drop AAMI Park for the G and hold the final there to pack as many people in as possible). Play the first game at Stadium Australia to avoid the afl finals and yeah (well maybe CA may crack the sads but yeah)

Guaranteed stadiums:
Suncorp (Qld)
Stadium Australia (NSW)
New Sydney Football Stadium (NSW)
Optus Stadium (WA)

Likely stadiums
AAMI Park (Victoria)
BankWest Stadium (NSW)
Marvel Stadium (Vic)
MCG (Vic)

Possible stadiums
McDonald Jones Stadium (NSW)
Robina Stadium (Qld)
Canberra Stadium (ACT) - although apparently not without an upgrade

If they are hoping for averages of over 40k people they can't play many games at stadiums like Robina, AAMI Park etc.
