Australian Super Rugby Team of the Week 2023

KOB1987

Rod McCall (65)
Thanks, it ended up being much less than I expected, partially because there has been a player or two to work out each week this year already. Thankfully it all doesn't move too much week to week so it shouldn't be too hard to maintain. The next step is getting all the Australian eligible players overseas on to it.
Not a criticism, but one missing is Angelo Smith - played U20's for Fiji so I assume he has to do the 5 year thing?

He's been in Brisbane for a couple of years, I think since 2021 at least so it's probably 2026 he becomes eligible. If any Wests fans know better please correct me.

I went off the squad listing in the front page of each of the team threads so there will definitely be some missing, mostly late signings like Smith. Will add him in tomorrow when I've had a chance to properly check it.

After the exhillarating game on Saturday night, the TOTW could easily and justifiably be either of the Tahs or the Brumbies teams. Consequently, I am picking my TOTW entirely from that game.

I will go with the Brumbies front row as overall they outpointed the Tahs in both open play and at set piece. Special mention though to Faulkner who put in a stirling effort on both sides of the scrum. Well done.

Similarly, I am going with both the Tahs locks as having the edge in general play and being best at lineout time.

The backrow battle was a beauty. Overall, I think Both Valetini and Samu finished on top of their counterparts, though Seu looks the goods while Harris was a rock. Hooper looked like an old man who knew he wasn't up to the challenge from his new opposite and resorted to cynical play and outright illegality just to stay in the game. So, Brumbies backrow for me.

White/Lolesio clear winners in the halfbacks. Tua had a particularly strong game but is ineligible. Nevertheless, Foketi put in a top class effort and wins the 12 spot. Len Ikitau was imperious in his half a game and did enough to win the spot. Wing places were shared between Nawaqanitawase and Toole while both Muirhead and Pietsch were also very good. Jorgenson was very impressive and has the skills to go all the way to the top, but Wright just bested him over the whole of the game.

So, the TOTW is :

1. Slipper
2. Lonergan
3. Ala'alatoa
4. Holloway
5. Hanigan
6. Valetini
7. Scott
8. Samu
9. White
10. Lolesio
11. Toole
12. Foketi
13. Ikitau
14. Nawaqanitawase
15. Wright

At #10 Carter slipped off tackles and his least outstanding game so far but still did more than any other 10 in attack. Did any other 10 make a tackle? Big influence on the team’s attack and a triumphant 2nd half.
Jack Stachan #22 was the next best in line and the reason for the Force strong second half.

I would have tried to keep that result hidden too Reg. In a week where one of the best Aussie derby Super Rugby games in years was played out, only a combined 4 players from both teams made the TOTW. Many fans on this site unfortunately are a joke.

Are you mixing round 5 and 6 up? I assume you're referring to Brumbies Tahs in round 6? If so 11 of the TOTW were from those sides
