Yes the leading line is overly dramatic, but it is funny as hell

Omicron has now been detected in Palmy North (a recent returnee who tested negative five (!) times while in MIQ) as well as Auckland. Once it starts spreading in the community, as opposed to within households, we'll all be back to a Red "traffic light" which might not quite the same as it did for Delta but at least it won't entail widespread lockdowns.

At some point NZ will need to rip the band-aid off and open things up. If you really want to minimise the impact that is probably after widespread booster doses and kids 5-11 have also had a chance to be vaccinated.

It seems foolhardy to think that COVID zero is attainable indefinitely.

^ Covid Zero got quietly binned several weeks ago in favour of vaxxing as many people as possible before the inevitable arrival of Omicron & whatever follows it. So far it seems to be working: booster uptake is over 20% in the two weeks it's been available & over 5% of 5-11's have been first-dosed in the first two days. I think they'll push back fully re-opening the borders from late Feb to sometime in March but I doubt they can hold off any longer than that.

Mate I think deep down our Premier still believes this but doesn't want to say it out loud!

We already have unlicenced Doctors.

Does nothing for the stat of 2000-4000 people dying from medical malpractice each year. Compare this to 2900 dying with or because of Covid over the pandemic. So over the last 2 years you have had a greater chance of dying by medical malpractice.

Great news.
Well, good news for the Brits anyway.
Perhaps sometime soon too in Oz (except for the Hermit Kingdom of WA)

1. the Government will no longer mandate the wearing of facemasks anywhere
2. the Government is no longer asking people to work from home
3. the legal requirement on people with coronavirus to self-isolate will be allowed to lapse
4. the country will start treating Covid more like flu
5. Face masks are no longer compulsory in classrooms for either pupils or staff
6. Mandatory certification for large venues "will end" after January 26
7. As Covid becomes endemic, the government will need to replace legal requirements with advice and guidance

In a statement that raises serious concerns about the statistics driving health advice in NSW,
The Australian reveals Two-thirds of children recorded as Covid-19 patients in hospital were never sick but merely required out-of-home care, a sweeping government-funded study reveals.

The study also issues a precautionary message to parents who are considering getting their kids vaccinated.

I haven't read the article, but that point - about kids just needing social care in hospital - is not new information, it's been highlighted by various people, including politicians and CHOs, since the start of the pandemic. I don't think it needed a "sweeping government-funded study" to discover it.

Delaying opening the WA borders isn’t JUST delaying the inevitable. It also gives time for boosters which are supposed to rebuild the protection from infection that Omicron took away from the double vaxed.

it is months which would be more problematic IF WA wasn’t doing as well as it is in the economy. You’d hope that the WA govt is also working hard on preparing the health system (though reports are mixed).

Omicron will come to WA but on going border delay is not non-sensical imo:

Until the next variant evolves in a low vax country and finds its way here. Then they wait for a high level of vaccination against that variant. Repeat forever.

Or at least - thats how it seems.

WA's situation is not as rosy at first glance. The God-Emperor McGowan of the People's Republic of Westralia is probably taking the only action available to a crippled social support network, including infrastructure and health. It is the sort of mismanagement we've had since the mining boom took off. This is the unroll of a Twitter thread posted by a WA person:

And when the next wave hits, what then? Wait to a 4th shot?

I know these thoughts will prevail, and when SARS-2 hits WA community spread, which it will, the health environment changes. As should policy.

It looks like we are headed to a programme of annual shots, possibly a combined annual jab with the flu.

Imo NSW was sensible moving to a broader acceptance of community spread. Delta had turned, vax rate was high, expectations were that it was a good time to move on. Then Omicron and probably restraints could have been reintroduced.

Vic never really had turned Delta and I suspect moved too early. Q should have had the benefit of hindsight (watching NSW), straight fail for me.

WA is sensibly holding out for as long as it works. Once the booster is widespread they’ll take a view.

Agree on the lack of health System preparation in WA. Crazy that it isn’t impacting the govt politically.
