With the Kiwis off to a rollicking start in the first test. England selection policies come to the fore (again);)

So reports are suggesting the ECB have offered NSW coach Trevor Bayliss 600,000 to take the Poms into the Ashes.

Personally I'd be throwing my cash at Gillespie.

Meanwhile England once again producing roads that don't move or spin. You know it's a dead pitch when Alistair Cook looks world class against Southee and Boult.

Kiwi's chasing 340+ and are 3/14 at lunch.

At this rate NZ will be extraordinarily lucky to escape from Lord's with a draw.

^^^NZ the better side for 3 days out of 5, but still lost. They let Cook and Stokes score too many runs, too quickly on day 4. They were never going to chase down 350 on day 5.

Gutted for the Kiwi's. They had the winning of this game several times and couldn't close the deal when it mattered. Hope they can go a step further in Leeds.

Joe Root is a class act, he could easily have a Smith-esque summer and hurt us big in the Ashes.

How many of their best XI would be in our best XI?

As for the Kiwis, going to be a long tour if they don't quickly figure out their batting order. McCullum isn't a test 1,2,3,4,5, or 6.

1,164 Test runs at 72.75 (4 x centuries incl a triple & iirc 2 x doubles) in 2014 would suggest otherwise.........

Average this series is 27.66.

I'd suggest you have a look at the opposition NZ had last year.

Touring Indian sides have struggled everywhere, that he averaged 133 against them isn't surprising. Rest of his runs came against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Also worth noting he averaged 14.50 against West Indies.

NZ 5/156 at Headingley, McCullum gone for 41 off 28 balls.

Well done to James Anderson on 400, sorta don't mind the guy these days.

He's a great player, but he needs to adjust his game to the condtions, the opposition and the format of the game. The damn the torpedoes approach can be costly at test level if one of the torpedoes hits.

NZ 350 all out, England 5/253 in reply - stumps day 2. England lost their last 4 wickets for 32 in the last session with some great bowling.

If batting against India was so easy how come no-one else average better than 42.5? Reminds me of when Crowe & Jones got their then-record partnership & an Aussie (of course) comm said something like "it's only Sri Lanka". TBF the other comm, probably an ex-player but can't recall, pointed out that you've still gotta get the runs & even a rubbish ball can get you out..........

I'll concede that BM isn't a Crowe, a Taylor or a Williamson, but to say he doesn't belong in a Test top-6 is just silly.

Stumps day 3, NZ lead by 338 with 4 wickets in hand.

Highest 4th innings totals to win at Leeds:

404-3: Australia beat England, 1948
315-4: England beat Australia, 2001
219-7: England beat Pakistan, 1982
186-5: England beat South Africa, 1929
180-7: Pakistan beat Australia, 2010

England require 455 to win in 5 and a bit sessions. The way England approach sport, they won't go for the win. Can Cook bat for 11 hours to save the match?;)
