Seemingly confirmed now.

One of the most universally applauded appointments in recent memory.

Surely this will bring in 100 years of Wallaby dominance, a golden age which will never end...

Or at least a 70% win ratio.
.

One would think it's not an unreasonable expectation to aim for a 65% win ratio for the remainder of 2013, 70% in 2014 and 75% for 2015.

It's unreasonable to expect miracles overnight. However progress over his tenure is what he must be judged on.

Fuck me dead: the ARU makes a timely and sound decision and effectively admits a major error. Could this be real?

I must say ARU, whilst I love the appointment and the news, I would like to see an end to the leaking of news and information to selected media hounds. If you and your staff couldn't hold your water until the official announcement bring that announcement forward. To me it still speaks of ethical issues in head office, even when I welcome the news.

A huge congratulations to Link being appointed.

Thanks also to Robbie Deans for his time at the helm. At times it has been frustrating, hell I've got no fingernails and hair left, but Robbie certainly did try his hardest. His convictions may not have always been right, but he stood by them and gave it a crack.

Thanks Robbie, but it's time for a change.

What would be considered a successful first 6 months for the new coach? Just curious as to the standard people here will measure him by

Any speculation on who he will name as assistants?

Apparently the way it is structured is that Link will get to choose his own assistants, unlike the team that Deans was given.

I'd like to see:

A) Nathan Shape kept as a lineout consultant,
B) A coach brought in as a specialist scrummaging consultant (Link can do the rest of the 'Forwards Coaching')
C) A specialist defensive coach
D) A specialist backs / attack coach
E) A kicking consultant that you don't need to Skype

I think what most fans want to see is:
  • Beat the Boks home and away
  • Beat Los Pumas home and away
  • Win one Bledisloe test and be competitive in the others
  • Win at least 3, probably 4 games on spring tour (remember 5 games on tour - if we lose to lions then win grand slam do we balance out?)
  • Pick players in their right positions
  • No 4am cock-ups

Timely? hmmmmm

Thanks to JON for the contractual fuckup that saw Robbie at the helm 20 months longer than he should have been.

To clarify: 'timely' in that prior to today the ARU had staunchly stated that they'd keep RD on to December 2013, come what may. The ARU does not usually concede a previous declaration as needing a big alteration.

And for the record I was part of a band of brothers here and elsewhere driven to apoplectic and horrified reactions when in early 2011 Deans' and JON's contracts were both renewed. That was a decision of monstrous arrogance, negligence and lack of proper explanation that has haunted the ARU like an evil ghost to this very day.

Anyone know if there will be changes within the ARU as well?? There may be at least one board member change in Sir Peter Cosgrove as rumour has it he will be appointed GG if the Libs win the next election but that is circumstantial rather than structural.

Anyone heard anything?

With regard to the specialists. I think a review of the structures created at Qld will give a guide to the types of specialists that will be sought.

Another thing to consider is that with the removal of the hit as the predominant scrum skill we will see a return to the older skill sets that made front rowers. Link is well and truly versed in that but I would prefer him to appoint somebody to attend to this area in isolation. Lets look to the past for somebody to pick up this area, somebody who knows about scrimmaging before the hit became the be all and end all. There are surely a few front rowers turned coaches who could offer technical skills in that area. I immediately thought of Topo, but I will hold back from naming anybody and be content with whoever Link names.

We start here with a clean slate as far as I am concerned and I find myself looking forward to the RC with anticipation where I had become largely ambivalent and maybe even disinterested to a large degree.

Good luck to Ewen and the Wallabies, from here on in.
