Ireland v Wallabies, Saturday 15/11 (Sunday morning Aus time)

I don't think JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor) has the legs to start a test, great to finish off a cameo but ..............................

Lynagh has the ability, but the test boys targeted him, isolated him and splattered him
On that, how come our players seem to get isolated so much? I was watching the Wales v Argentina game after ours in the hope of finding some sort of silver lining, Wales could be the Wallabies a lot of the time if you were colour blind, but as bad as they are even their players manage to not get isolated like ours do.

At an overall level, the injury surveillance data is really clear.

If you don't rest players over the short term (ie don't play too many consecutive matches) and the long term (don't play too many matches in a season), then some of them are going to get injured.

You don't know which ones, but if it's not managed, it will be more than it should be.

I expect we will see test players rested through Super Rugby on 2026.
The biggest issue in my opinion is the amount and intensity these guys are made to train at. This fascination with a "test match Tuesday" where they bash the crap out of the players is well overused in my opinion. If load is such a factor they should be prioritizing the games over trainings like the NFL does

1/ Your 10 is a dwarf
2/ You put him on the blind side wing in defence
3/ Your blind side winger is tasked with filling the line
4/ The attackers now spot a dwarf isolated on the blindside wing and send contestable kicks at him with monster backrowers running through him

Wouldn’t the current season mean that the first three of those quoted points happen automatically?
As usual, the likes of Skelton will test these guidelines out the most. No way will his club let him have an additional well off after the test windows.

Edit. Will take this somewhere else. Not very relevant to this weeks game

We have a test window, if Aus chooses to be greedy and schedule more games, they know what the reality is for players based overseas

Yes but I’m not referring only to lynagh, Potter got isolated badly on the weekend at least once and our big ball runners often manage it as well

By my count, the cleaners missed their cue for at least 10 breakdowns against Italy - there were a half dozen in the last 15 mins alone. We can't even blame fatigue - a lot of them were replacements who hadn't been on long.

This is the #1 reason we lost for mine

JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor) is just there to help the team prepare, outside of him there are only 2 specialist 10's

On Tuesday after a solid training session in wet and greasy conditions at the Wanderers ground, Schmidt has a full complement from which to pick the team, assistant coach Tom Donnelly said.

He rejected suggestions that playmaker James O’Connor was at training only to “help the team prepare”. Only Will Skelton who failed a medical after suffering an injured ankle has been ruled out with Carter Gordon recovering from a twinge in his quad.

Donnelly said it was clear in the past two games that the area around the breakdown needed work in order to create space for the ball carriers. He said if the backs can get quicker ball then the team can play with more space. Ireland too have been lacklustre in recent matches, struggling with their line out, nervous fumbles and some problems with the scrum, which has given Ireland coach Andy Farrell has some selection battles of his own.

Good insight but I guess leaves me none the wiser for my initial query - if it's not fatigue, and it's a core responsibility of these guys that they presumably have been practicing since the U13's, then why is it happening? (or not happening as the case may be).

I don't think we know enough about the team structure, or each player's role within that to say what's happening, especially with the limited camera angles we have available to us.

Pods being set up, but then missing the clean is a really bad spot to be in at international level though. That should be 100% guaranteed possession. And it wasn't on the weekend

eg would we do a better job if McReight had a role to secure our ball in the middle of the park - probably. But he appears to have a job on the blindside at the moment.

Yeah, one of my bugbears is the lack of work off the ball in Aus rugby, a good chase does the isolation, but units working hard to get back provide support makes that chase more risky

How many times have you seen 3 or 4 Kiwis spread across the field on kick return?

All of a sudden the chase has to decide whether they can allocate extras chasers to the receiver as opposed to providing cover to negate the ball being on the other side of the field in seconds

Have a look at Pistol Pete's effort at 74:30.

Not nearly good enough at this level

Honestly I don't think the players know enough about the team structure at times. Players going by themselves, other players standing off when they are closest to the ruck. It's really on the game drivers at 9, 10 to organize this. There doesn't seem to be a plan after 3 or so phases so it's really hard to just expect players to be right where they need to be to clean. The communication doesn't seem to be there. It's an area I think we clearly miss Nic White in

And other than pride, does it really matter? 7th may as well be 8th or 12th?
It doesn't matter at all in our case as we know we are going to be in Pool A with one team ranked above us and 2 teams ranked below us. And unless that team ranked above us is South Africa or NZ the pool could have been exactly the same even if we did finish up in the Top 6, depending on further results over the next 2 weeks of course.
