An observation of Schmidt is he's too much about structure. Some structure is obviously good. However on the field players need to be able to back themselves and if something is on, it's on. Not be scared to have a crack if it is not in Joe's structure or what seems to be strict game plan. We seem to lack genuine rugby iq sometimes. Carter Gordon and Jorgo have it. Give them a licence to have a crack. Jorgo needs more ball though.

And unless that team ranked above us is South Africa or NZ the pool could have been exactly the same even if we did finish up in the Top 6, depending on further results over the next 2 weeks of course.

Yeah I feel like for the most part guaranteeing that we don't draw NZ or RSA (and to a lesser extent Ireland) is the biggest carrot. Otherwise broadly agree - not as much distance between the quality of team 5-10 these days compared to 5-10 years ago.

In a vacuum his structure is a pretty intelligent way to play, the problem is that it's completely reliant on ball carriers getting over the gain line, cleaners being super effective and a really smart 9 & 10 to know when best to utilize the space made available

It's like a square peg into a round hole with us at the moment. Our carry's aren't nearly effective enough, nor are the cleaners, and our 9 & 10 look completely at sea when it comes to decision making which has become far more of an issue since Tom Wright went down

There needs to be an adaption as we don't have the players to maximize this system right now. Problem is that Schmidt has never been the most ready to adapt. When things went wrong towards the end of his Ireland tenure, he decided to lean in more to "his system" despite the results showing it wasn't working

Let's try to be a bit rational in our blame games KOB. Might be grounds for criticising using recently overseas based players but no thinking person would attribute poor form to the Waratahs until the player had joined the organisation.

aus rugby has always been more effective with solid base structures

In space, getting front foot ball and then getting around the umbrella defence is the issue

There were reports that Ikitau, who last month completed his move to Exeter, had an agreement with the English club that he would not play the Italy game, but the midfielder instead put his omission down to the fact that Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt wanted to see more of Hunter Paisami and Joseph-Aukuso as a centre partnership.

"I think just with the combinations, I think Joseph and Hunter were going well," Ikitau told reporters in Dublin. "And obviously it was first week back in [camp], so I don't think Joe wanted me to play. [It] was obviously disappointing, but [after] the week of training and training this week, I should be up for selection."

Ikitau's relationship with coaches is the strangest thing I've seen in a long time.

For some reason, very good coaches don't like what he's doing.

A mainstay under Dave Rennie, Ikitau was initially selected by Jones in the No.13 jersey, but after suffering a short-term injury a month out from the 2023 World Cup was surprisingly left out of the Wallabies’ squad for the tournament.

Ikitau then copped another reality check when Schmidt told his agent, David Shand, that he wasn’t in his initial plans with the Wallabies either.

Reality check? It's not reality to rate Len as inferior to either of Paisami or JAS. Time for those errant coaches, including Joe Schmidt, to get severe dose of reality themselves. And in Joe's case that means playing Len at 13. Hunter should continue at 12 until someone better emerges but under specific instructions to vary his game to get the ball wider more often.

Not sure the Eddie Jones one was the same. He was in the team pre World Cup and he effectively broke his snapped his shoulder. I think he just wanted to move on because he didn’t think he would get back to full fitness quick enough. Wrong move considering how it all went down in the end but of all the disastrous things that occurred under that campaign I don’t think that was the worse.

He won the John Ealse medal playing inside centre. That is reality.
