Mate, NZR have been fighting off Loig since it became a thing. The threat level ebbs & flows but you're right in the sense that it's steadily increasing & changing in nature. I think NZR know the threat will never go away but at the same time can mostly be contained.
By fighting off you mean relying on the AB brand.

If R360 does fall over I wonder if there is something in the concept that can be used by Super Rugby going forward. We're going to have the Super Round in Christchurch - could it be worth having 1 or 2 more of these in a season?

Or even using this model as a way to connect a bit more with the Japanese League One. E.g. 1 or 2 weekends in Japan where there's crossover matches or a mini tournament. I could imagine the tour packages being pretty popular.

Pretty expensive.
Not really the same but I had thought that we could add an American team that didn't travel. They'd still get smoked by each franchise I guess.

I don't think there was much point in Australian sides targeting the league guys like Lomax and Papenhuyzen for a single transition year, but with R360 unlikely to get up and Lomax getting shopped around it changes things. Lomax could be a very good pickup for the Brumbies with Wright out injured, particularly if this is likely to be Muirhead's last year. Will obviously depend on what they can offer and if RA comes to the table, which I'm not sure they'll want to do to any great degree, but if he has interest in test match rugby it could come off.

Fiji should get the next Super Round when we can get their facilities upgraded.
That would be awesome.
Super Round I think it's happening because groups in Christchurch are fronting the money not because Super Rugby/SANZAAR particularly cares to celebrate a new stadium.

Correct:

"Unlike the Melbourne event, which was licensed out to events company TEG Sport, NZ Rugby and the Crusaders will take control of the event in Christchurch with the assistance of Venues [Christchurch]"

"ChristchurchNZ, a ratepayer-funded economic development agency, has played a key role in bringing the event to the city.

"A ChristchurchNZ spokesperson would not say how much it paid to Super Rugby Pacific. [BUT]

"In 2024 ChristchurchNZ paid SailGP a $400,000 cash "host city'' payment and $520,000 in various costs associated with running the event which attracted 6000 visitors who spent $3.3 million."

So WR (World Rugby) & the member RU's have ~2.5 years to grifter-proof our game, then. Maybe appeal to the player manager's better nature or failing that their self-interest a la NRL's horsey guy?

All while trying to balance the needs of the test game against the wants of the club game....

The best possible protection they could bring in right now is some sort of system for transfer fees, which would actually provide a reasonable avenue for a comp like this to be setup without risking it strip mining the broader game for talent.

That doesn't necessarily help against a full rogue competition, but there is less risk of one of those getting up.
