Northern Hemisphere Rugby 2020

Thought we needed a thread for all NH rugby for the just started season. Whether it be Top 14, Premiership or the Pro 14.

Especially with a surely record number of SH players up there. Top 14 is 9 rounds in and is in a state of disarray as is Premiership rugby after four rounds (every team has lost at least once). Think things will settle down a bit after all the RWC players have returned to their respective heavy weight teams.

The Champions Cup starts this weekend with some great games. Liam Gill's Lyon (with Bastareaud packing down at 8) faces Naiyaravoro's Northampton Saints with Lawes, Biggar and the Franks brothers.

Also, Toulouse should have both Arnold locks playing against Gloucester, with the spine of the French team (Dupont, Ntamack, Medard, Huget and bloody Cheslin Kolbe).

You can never get away from rugby!

I missed this juicy one last week.........

Saracens are confident they will be successful in an official review of the sanctions imposed upon the club following a breach of salary cap rules.

Premiership Rugby (PRL) handed the reigning champions a maximum 35-point deduction and a fine of more than £5m after a seven-month investigation found the club failed to disclose property co-investments between the owner Nigel Wray and key players including England captain Owen Farrell over the past three seasons.

I watched bits of a few games from weekend, some good rugby being played.Enjoyed the Bristol/Exeter game, Bristol coming back from 17-0 at oranges to win with a try just after fulltime hooter! As a kiwi I noticed how well Steven Luatua played for Bristol. Found it all enjoyable so may have to relook at my comments about not watching rugby until next year:confused:

Have to add I hope that Sarries don't get away with cheating salary cap, they appealing their fine etc!

Six nations starts in 11 days, exciting times. I've run my eye over the recently announced squads and given my very unqualified opinion on how far they'll go.

France
My personal favourite NH team. Dark horse to win the competition, new coach in Fabien Galthie has thrown out all the oldies from the team, going with an incredibly young team, definitely both eyes on RWC2023 (in France!). Gone are Lopez, Medard, Huget and Slimani. New captain in Charles Ollivon who is a handy flanker. I’m going to say it that France has the most exciting & dangerous backline in the NH and potentially the world. Youngsters in the halves in Dupont and Ntamack who have a devastating combination for Toulouse right now. It’s unclear who will be the starting 10. Normally Ntamack would be a shoe-in, but there are another two very talented young flyhalves in Jalibert and Carbonel. Jalibert has been playing a lot of 15 and Ntamack is useful at 12, so it is possible to see all three in the team. Throw in arguably the most damaging player in the Top 14, Vakatawa and two great wingers in Teddy Thomas and Damian Penaud, they have a such talent. I think Galthie will play it a bit safer, retain the Dupont-Ntamack axis probably with this:
9. Dupont 10. Ntamack 11. Penaud 12. Fickou 13. Vakatawa 14. Thomas 15. Ramos 23. Jalibert
Finally in the forwards, they have a man who is either all neck or no neck, Camille Chat at hooker who is brilliant and Sekou is another young flanker from Stade Francais in the mould of Dusautoir. Very exciting for France right now, probably a year too early to win the Six Nations, but they could easily go all the way.

England
Doesn’t seem to be much of a legacy plan for no. 8 or scrumhalf. Mako is out with a broken arm and there are no other specialist 8s named. And the two scrummies in Willie Heinz and Ben Youngs are 33 and 30 respectively. Will probably win the competition by being boring and now all the Sarries have nothing else to focus on but the Six Nations. I am excited for Jacob Umaga, the young flyhalf, nephew of Tana. Looks to be pretty talented.

Ireland
New coach, new squad, same Sexton. Don’t watch much Irish rugby but Jack O’Donoghue will be a useful backrower for years to come when they finally decide to stop picking PO’M & Stander. Apart from that seems that their outside backs will continue to get stronger.

Wales
New coach, Constable Wayne Pivac. Excited to see what Wales can do away from GatlandBall. They have done very well in getting two potential debutants away from England’s grubby mitts. Louis Rees Zammit has speed that we can’t seem to find in Australia, but by all accounts is very Welsh. Whereas Nick Tompkins is a great uncapped centre who seemed English through and through, playing for England u20s and Saracens. But was overlooked by Eddie and is now playing for Wales through some grandparent.

Scotland
Seems to be quite a few injuries hanging around unfortunately. But all aboard the Scotland train with Scottish Quade Cooper, Finn Russell. Hogg is leading the team from the back, odd to have a fullback Captain but there weren’t many other choices. Rory Hutchinson was Northampton’s breakout player last year and will be partnering up with Huw Jones in the centres. Both missed out on the RWC squad last year but should be mainstays of the Scottish backline for years to come. If Scotland can get any ball, their backline should be pretty exciting.

Italy
Buona fortuna my Italian friends, you’ll need it.

Predictions
England will probably put out the most unchanged team and after RWC2019 are deserved clear favourites to win the competition. But after that, the field is truly open. The bookies then have Ireland at 2nd, which I don’t think is justified. Mastermind Schmidt has left the building and I think will take a lot of success with him. I expect France to come 2nd. Same applies for Wales who are predicted at 3rd, losing Gatland will suck and there’s some youngsters floating around but not enough talent I don’t think. Bookies have France at 4th, but I’m really excited about them and should come in 2nd. Scotland and Italy at 5th and 6th sound about right. Opening round game of France hosting England in Paris should be an absolute belter.

Scotland v Fiji has also been cancelled & as with France & Italy will be counted as a 28-0 win to Scotland. Apparently comp organisers are hopeful Fiji v last-placed team in the other Group (probably Georgia) will proceed.

France will field a team of all rookies in the final this weekend against England. The top14 clubs threw a hissy fit and said that players could only play 3 internationals, so all of France’s top players have to return to their clubs this weekend.

It means that Ben Youngs, 9 for England, has more caps than the entire French team combined. Complete joke.

^ also the clearest-ever breach of WR (World Rugby)'s Reg 9, the Special International Window ends this weekend, I believe.

Well France are the real deal. They had 30 caps or something combined and they were the better team for 95 minutes against England's RWC final team. EJ (Eddie Jones) would be a tad worried. France's depth is insane. Not even darkhorses now to take the RWC23 in their own backyard - very, very exciting times.

I haven't seen the game yet but they're definitely tracking in the right direction. Will be interesting to see how they go in the upcoming Six Nations. Kinda feels like their players just need experience now and they're on their way.

They went nearly 100 minutes and their defence didn't fall apart with a complete bunch of rookies, sounds like a very well drilled team with a lot of depth.

The Shaun Edwards effect. Amazing.

He's left Wales and they're a rabble and turned France from a rabble into class

Wonder if he wants to live in Bondi for a couple years.

To be fair, there was already a fair amount of talent coming through the french system which had nothing to do with Edwards. Go and watch the last couple of Junior World Championships if you want to see some of the possible future stars. France if they get it right will be a real contender come next RWC.

On the flipside I do worry about my boys in green. Not sure where this Irish team is heading, stuck in limbo between the rigid Schmidt system and playing some heads up rugby all the while getting beaten up by Eddie's England.

No doubt. Once in 20 year type amount of talent. Very exciting to be a French fan. Their backrow stocks are nuts, so much more athletic than ours.

Not a bad shift against Scotland. Does seem like your peak (unfortunately in between RWC cycles) was at England's low point. You're comfortably the 2nd best home nation and hard to see that changing with your personnel (feels similar to Aus).

Clermont: 31
Munster: 39

So desperate for some footie I tuned in to this replay of a NH match from last month.

Engrossing contest, hardly the plop and flop I was expecting.

Clermont up 28 pts after 25 mins FFS and then they gave it the ol' mercenary gallic shrug and switched right the fuck off and got run down.

Matsushima did a Goromaru and completely recused himself from the matchday proceedings. Just stood wayyy at the back watching. Absolutely did not want to know. Pathetic. Cotton wooled himself. Didnt actually touch the ball. At all. Incredible. Plus he's put on about 10 kgs of fat since RWC last year. Shouldve been docked his match day pay for this Clayton's performance.

Clermont. OMG. Talk about pea-hearted mercenaries. All The Fijian lads shouldve be read the riot act.

Mercenaries. Useless. Nothing more to keep them in a battle than a meagre wage which is just about enough to make them want to kill for you but not enough to make them want to die for you.
