Kings will be retaining players like Bailey Park, Hadley Tonga, Austin Durbridge, Edwin Langi, Nathaniel Titi.

I am definitely forgetting some others but they will be the team to beat coming off their 16a premiership
Get ready for B and W to remind us it was a shared premiership

You mean their shared premiership, with Newington. In fact I don't recall Kings ever beating this Newington in this age group, ever. In the 16As, Kings achieved a draw and that is as close as they got. Newington for the most part have dominated this age group since the 13s, with Scots being their most dangerous rivals for the most part since 13s. Kings have certainly been one of their more difficult opponents, with hard tough and close results. With Joeys improving by each year.

This is not the first time you have made this mistake. It shows a lack of respect to a fellow GPS school. Certainly, Newington would acknowledge, a shared premiership with Kings. As a part-time teacher, who' has taught at Kings( and it was a wonderful experience) including some of the boys in this age group. I have always acknowledged their excellent performance, particularly, against Newington. It's part of the GPS ethos, to respect a fellow GPS opponent and value their worth.

So in future, please acknowledge that it's a shared premiership, it's a matter of courtesy, that is expected within the GPS system. Particularly, as I regard Kings with great admiration and respect.
Newington only won the shared premiership because of a few players who are new to the school anyways. (Roosters juniors)
Scots are by far the better team in this age group and will win the 2024 premiership

This is the first time I have made that mistake as that was my second post on the forum.

As for the 16A comp in 2021 and to my understanding both Riverview and Newington went undefeated and sadly we didn't see that matchup due to the covid shutdown.

That means Newington won back-to-back unofficial 16A prems so they should have a pretty strong "opens" age group. @Black & White do you think Newington should enter a 3rd-grade team, I think having this could add to the strong rugby culture in Stanmore.

Hello Addiction2Rugby39511
Newington have been a force in this age group since the 13As, where they have beaten Scots more times than not. 26-7 is a convincing result this year, that Newington is indeed a real force in this age group. As for new players entering the school, please no excuses, it displays a sense of "Sour Grapes". Besides, Scots are no strangers to the entry of addition players, to their playing numbers. To which I have no disagreement with. I know of plenty of teams, who have fielded new players, but have failed to deliver. It comes down to coaching, team cohesion, team spirit and leadership.

Add these virtues, to the talent already within the Newington16As, and you have a champion side, that shared the premiership with Kings. As for 2024, that is simply too far into the future to be making, such rash and impulsive conclusions. Remember, there are 5 other schools, all who can change the balance of power by 2024.Too many things can happen, to alter such a prediction.

This years tips I’d suggest this, tip against anyone kings or joeys are playing. Kings and joeys have beaten every team almost in this age group by 30-40+ only team who has come close is newo.

Joeys 1st lineup will be hard to predict due to the fact that a Couple boys within the that team were “underage” year 12 but 17. They do have class players returning though like Joey Fowler, pat young, Oscar Jorgensen, Harry darling, hiwi sharps and Henry okane brother of Harry okane class of 2020 all whom have played high levels of representative footy

kings team will be difficult aswell the backline has many player’s contesting for spots and aslo the front row. I’ve heard about 6 front rowers have all played at a minimum of nsw schools team/Sydney level and majority been apart of gen blue.
kings will have players like Boston fakafunu, Austin durbriage, tyrese lokeni, hadely Tonga, Edwin langi and Nick ashdown to name a few. There are a large amount of boys I’ve missed though, but I see depth being a great asset of this kings side. Thinking most of that 16As team will play 3rds and 2nds footy this year.

Newo will be well suited aswell having boys from there 16s team and year 11s from 2022 season, I think they are the biggest dark horse in the competition. And could upset kings or joeys in a game or two this season with the concept of the home and away season. Players like toby rodwell, Daniel lua, lipina ata and both the cleaverly boys potentially.

Teams like shore view will be making up the numbers, Scott’s will be well suited through there 16s boys but I don’t see them being able to knock of any of the big names, 2024 though will be there year to lose.

I believe this is the Scots age group that beat the Newington full strength side 15A's with a Glengarry side

Surely not, view who are not the strongest in this age group beat scots in 15a's.

I'm also interested to hear any thoughts on riverview's upcoming year. I was impressed with their term 2 form this year but after the break they came back and weren't the same.

Joey Fowler is in Yr 12 this year. He won't be back but will be eligible for the U18's next year.
Great to speculate on what the competition will look like next year but just using the 16's as a guide on how teams will go is not a good indication.
Next year will be about depth. Some of those schools have high quality players but with 10 hard rounds a number of injuries will occur and depth will be a major factor in who wins the competition.

Based on the 2022 Joeys teams, and those still in year 11, if Joeys had to name a 2023 1st XV today - the following is where it would be using just 1sts, 2nds and a few 16A’s:
  1. ???
  2. Bill Smith (16A)
  3. James Winter (2nds)
  4. Joe Mangelsdorf (2nds)
  5. Arthur Greer/Harry Seigmeier (16A/2nds)
  6. Will Bensley (2nds)
  7. Patrick Young (1sts)
  8. Eamon Doyle (2nds/1sts)
  9. Hwi Sharples (1sts)
  10. Ben Playford (2nds)
  11. Caleb Murphy (2nds)
  12. Oscar Jorgensen (1sts)
  13. Hunter Fogarty (2nds)
  14. Ben Whyte (2nds/1sts)
  15. Patrick Broe (1sts)
No doubt there will be players from outside this group who come into contention (e.g. Charlie O’Kane and Paddy O’Malley to consider in the forwards, Ben Chick in the backs, and an exceptional 15A’s age group coming up. There needs to be a preferred option - or position change for someone - at loose head prop identified. The wingers named here are quick - but are centres and aren’t specialist wingers).

A lot needs to go wrong to come in the position on the ladder in 2023 some seem to be predicting.

Hello marlins merchant

Difficult to say for a number of reasons. Depth at Newington is a major concern. They field 6 teams in the open division, but still have to compete with Aussie Rules, who have two open teams and soccer has about 10 teams in the opens. So a lot of boys go elsewhere other than Rugby.
For me, the biggest issue is an absence of a large boarding house. As a day school, our boys have to travel long and tiring days, that squeezes the enthusiasm, out of our boys for Rugby, particularly with regards to training.

So I wouldn't advocate, any playing 3rd XV level Rugby, until New have a larger boarding population. Particularly, in years 11&12. Further, I believe Newington would need to field at least 8 teams in the open division, before competing one on one in the opens at 3rd XV level.

But you never know, as I believe the Concordia Club, would be a good buy as a potential future Boarding House. It's on Stanmore Road, not far from the school and could if refurnished house, a couple of hundred boarders. So one can dream, but having spoken to several Old Boys, this idea could prove to be popular. But the current Head, seems more interested in establishing a Glenngarry type campus. To which I would be opposed to. If parents want an outdoor educational program, send your son to Scots or Geelong Grammar. To me Outdoor Education is over rated and can be accomplished through the existing Cadet Corps.

Commenting here, although it doesn't concern the GPS, I know everyone is missing rugby season and as such more than a few will be interested.

Barker VS Nudgee

I dont why your so hard on newington .. they have always been and are a competitive rugby school, its never a easy match .
..

and the issues you raised are faced by every GPS school .. Joeys won the GPS soccer and rugby this year … so obviously you can’t blame soccer for Rugbys success or demise …

As for boarding I only think it makes a difference if a large percentage of the school boards, otherwise it won’t make a large enough difference … and it’s not the be and end all of success anyway

Hello Goose-step

Never to the same extent as at Newington. As an Old Boy of the school, I hardly describe myself being hard on a school I love. I simple point out the inherent difficulties, that exist at Newington. Further more , these difficulties are understood by other Old Boys, who support my redirection based on an expanded boarding.

I had the chance to express my vision, at survey of a future Newington earlier this year. It was well received.

Hey mate, no stress,

I will say from an outsiders perspective, i always regarded newington as a strong sporting school, and relatives who went there who were all sporting mad .

Hi Black & White,

I’ve been a long time reader of the G&G and have really enjoyed your obvious passion for both the GPS and for Newington in particular.

I couldn’t agree more about the need for more boarders, it brings a great dynamic to the school to have boys from the country and creates terrific friendships both in and out of the boarding house.

I must disagree however on Newington not competing in the 3rd XV competition, it would be brilliant for the boys not in the senior squad, and give some definition about the season outside of the firsts and seconds. They might not be competitive in year one but over time I believe it will help raise all rugby at Newington.
Thanks
