A team to watch in CSDA and CAS competition could be Waverley College.

Although better renowned for brawn than brain, the Waverley opens this year have 10 debaters, an increase of 333% on previous years and given the success of this cohort in last years CSDA (winning 6/6 and losing narrowly to CBHS in the finals) they should be regarded as genuine challengers for the title. The greater challenge for Waverley will come in the CAS competition where they will have to overcome both the opposition and the anti-Waverley bias that is a serious problem preventing the rise of a school still only considered good for footy. The CAS has, in previous years, been a 5-team competition with Waverley merely making up the numbers and adjudications, despite Waverley being obviously superior in some debates, have reflected this perception of Waverley being to debating what Sydney Boys and Grammar are to rugby.

Lol.

Wonder what school you go to.

Are you suggesting that adjudicators are obviously biased against Waverley?

That certainly would be something...

It's more of a perception than an active bias and is, I would hope, clearer in the younger years where knox and barker old boys make up the majority of adjudicators.

Waverley are perceived to be spanners and debates are judged accordingly

With no debates happening this week, does anyone have any information or updates about the progress of the ISDA? The ISDA website seems to be dead in regards to updating results, so anyone know about any teams who have exceeded expectations, or already qualified in groups?

Yes.

Not sure if you’ve seen it, considering this thread has been barren for almost a month now, but the ISDA site has updated the scoresheet with results up to the end of round 6. As to your second question, judging by results alone there are obviously the teams like grammar who are doing well as always, but one team that looks to be surprising in Senior A is King’s on 5 wins out of 6. Before the season they weren’t even predicted to make it out of their group- anyone know what’s happened there?

FYI state team is up:

Team:
Eden Blair (c)
Andreas Orsmond
Thomas Shortridge
Tandee Wang

Reserves:
Ella Finlay
Isabella Monardo
Daniel Yim

Surprising choices?

Shocked that Liam Thorne didn't make the team despite doing pathways. Thought a starting possy in aus. schools was a guarantee. He's always got next year.

Lawrence Campbell- um, who was the contestant for aloysius? and what happened to grammar and high in it? Heard High entered one of their 1st grade debaters (koslowski) in it. I laughed a little that Joeys hosted it, as it must have been a LONG time since they produced a high quality debater or speaker in general. In Eastside, on Friday, High lost to Sydney Girls' proving that Sydney Girls are still probably the most dominant CHS school.

If Koslowski was at Lawrence Campbell does that mean he wasn't at the Eastside debate? Would that affect the outcome?

That's ungracious and more than a little snobbish. You don't have to go back very far to see that Joeys had a speaker place at Lawrence Campbell more recently than Alo's, New, Kings or Riverview. Hosting is simply an act of generosity which many schools avoid.

More interesting is the fact that accounts of the night I've heard all remarked on the earnestness of speakers, even to the point of "preachy" in some cases, which is the diametric opposite of the competition's purpose.

Dunno about recent Joeboys who shone in the Lawrence Campbell but don't slag them, Murray Gleeson (former Chief Justice of both the NSW Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia) the won the LC during his time at Joeys.

Yes, that is true. Murray Gleeson was a very well versed man, definitely the best speaker Joeys has produced. But, in recent years they have been lagging behind in debating especially. They are like how High is to rowing, just there to make up numbers. Joeys are progressing now, often coming away with wins, but it could be a while before we see any silverware for Joeys.

Meanwhile, the last Eastside round before finals is on this Friday. Will be interesting to see if High comes out as winners of the competition for a few years running now.

Joeys came third in Lawrence Campbell in 2012 with Harry Maher - an excellent debater and public speaker. He is now coaching their firsts I believe. In recent ISDA they won 3 lost 4. I think they use ISDA as more of a warmup for GPS. Problem is if you don't make finals of ISDA its Term 3 before GPS starts, so months with no debating.

don't h8 just deb8

By the looks of this forum I'm really not surprised that we beat your state in the Nationals final. A few great speakers doesn't make a great team!

4-3 suckers
