Interesting results regarding ISDA, especially how it may bode for the GPS competition with the competition boasting 3/4 semifinalists (potentially all four if Grammar got up - credit to Barker on the win but does anyone know if their debate was a dodgy call?)

Assuming the results posted above are correct. Of the 7 GPS teams in ISDA, 1 was an Octo Finalist, 3 were Quarter Finalists and 3 are now Semi Finalists. This is panning out as a good year for the GPS. Doesn't give us much of a clue as to who will win though. Perhaps, finally, a breakup of the High, Grammar Duopoly with some other strong teams in the GPS?

It certainly was an interesting result, Grammar had the easier side, and Barker wasn't strong in the rounds, but the adj. was the chief adj. for the comp.

The results are all legit. It certainly is looking like a strong GPS year. Grammar seemingly isn't in great form (loss to Barker + Scots), but I can't speak for High.

In terms of potential winners (excluding High) Scots or View perhaps? Maybe Joeys or Kings?

In ISDA news:

Riverview beat Joeys in a 2-1 Split on the aff of the topic that “Progressive Individuals and Organisations should not support or provide advice to Trump” (paraphrased).

Barker beat Kings (no news re split or topic).

Should be an interesting final, certainly one that no one predicted. Riverview has already beaten Barker if anyone is looking for an indication of potential victors.

A hearty congratulations to Riverview and Barker!

Does anyone know the deal for the Australian team schedule this year, ie how many weeks will Grammar be without Yim? That may be quite significant for their GPS season if the other schools replicate their ISDA performance. Luckily it tends to be earlier in the season, as their last two debates are against Riverview and Sydney Boys.

Apparently only the first week, against Joeys.

Riverview beat Barker unanimously on the topic that “We should ban all occupational licenses” (Doctor, Lawyer, Plumber, Electrician, consists of exams and or training), taking home the senior A ISDA premiership.

Knox beat Kambala in Year 9.

Barker won in Year 10, beating MLC.

Senior B, MLC beat shore.

Greetings all,
The GPS Debating season is upon already, with the first round debates this Friday. The topic area is sport, so expect some interesting topics.

Interestingly, some rules have been changed with the following being the most significant:
Change to Adjudication 2018
  • Panel adjudications for Firsts and Seconds have been discontinued.
  • To balance the number of adjudicators employed for the junior and senior timeslot, the competition will only provide non-aligned adjudicators for the following debates: 7A, 8A, 8B, 9A, 9B, 10A, 10B, thirds, seconds and firsts. "
This could mean some very controversial adjudications in 1sts and 2nds.
The draw this Friday is (with a prediction):
Scots vs Newington - Scots to win
Joeys vs Grammar - Grammar to win
Kings vs High - High to win
Riverview vs Shore - Riverview to win
Any other predictions for these debates or for the competition?

These predictions look spot on, but I too am interested in how the competition runs without panels. Especially given the GPS systems lack of finals, and how close the teams look to be, a single rogue loss could derail a team.

But adjudicator situation aside, I wonder how the GPS would cope with a finals system like ISDA. Would certainly make for more spectacle in the final debates as opposed to just being more normal matches, and would give teams a chance for redemption after a loss. It’s not like adding two weeks to a seven week competition would hurt anybody either.

High indeed looks strong this year.

The CHS Squad is out:

Alex De Araujo (SBHS 12)
John Bivell (Fort Street 12)
Laura Charlton (Smith's Hill 11)
Ashna Hedge (SGHS 12)
Sophia Mendes (NSG 12)
Sophie Shead (HGHS 12)
Guy Suttner (SBHS 12
Anna Sophia Zahar (SGHS 11)

Seems pretty standard from the same old schools, I do wonder how Indigo Crossweller didn't trial in.

Hume Barbour State Final is next Friday between Sydney Boys and Smith's Hill. Semi-finalists were SBHS, SHHS, Hornsby Girls and Sefton HS.

This page will normally have results for all teams updated by around Wednesday each week.

Last week High, Grammar, Scots and Riverview all won, although I'm not aware of the topics or how well those teams actually did. Any further information would be much appreciated.

This week in Round 2 on Education (predicted winner in bold):
Riverview vs Newington
Grammar vs Scots
Joeys vs High
Shore vs Kings

High have taken out the Hume Barbour trophy. Topic was “That we should stop commemorating wars” - Smiths Hill affirmative, Sydney Boys negative. Congratulations to both teams on what I’m sure was an excellent debate!

This thread has been largely inactive all this time, but there are still plenty of exciting debates in the upcoming weeks.
Reps (GPS, CHS, ART, CAS) start this Wednesday. I'm not too sure about the draws, location, times or team members, so any information would be greatly appreciated!

This Friday is also the final round of GPS. Once again, the High vs Grammar clash remains the decider for Firsts/Seconds/Thirds this year. High goes into the Firsts and Thirds undefeated and have already secured at least a co-premiership. The winner of the Seconds debate wins the competition outright. Clearly three very exciting debates with high calibre debaters from Grammar and High.

Predictions: High - Firsts, Thirds; Grammar - Seconds

I look forward to the results of this Friday!
