Getting to the business end of the season. All the favourites pretty much through (except maybe the Knox result)

With a predictable Octos round now complete it’s onto the QF preview.

1. Aloysius v Cranbrook

Giant-killers Cranbrook are on a hot streak of form having beaten Joeys to qualify then CAS nemesis Knox. Now they find themselves just 3 wins away from the ISDA title. Little is known about this team but clearly they are not to be under-estimated.

But all good things must come to an end and next Friday night that will be in the form of St Aloysius.

Given Aloys are the undefeated CAS premiers and boasting rep speakers, the path to victory for Cranbrook is a very narrow one.

Aloys to win the quarter.

2. Joeys v View

How do you pick this one ? Joeys topped the hardest pool then had a tough octo opponent. Their form is strong. View have debated impeccably thus far and are a force to be reckoned with. Both teams had state callback speakers. Joeys will have to be brilliant to get through View’s defence as View will not give them an inch (oops sounds like a rugby preview) and I think they will.
If there was an adj panel it would be Joeys in a split decision after a 25 minute deliberation.

3. Grammar v Shore

With a free ticket to the grand final on offer (as barker/Scots lose their state speakers for the semi), there’s lots up for grabs here.

Shore should not be under estimated - their A team has kept out a state speaker and they have strength across the bench.

The sheer pressure and weight of expectations on this Grammar team is enormous but pressure makes diamonds and Grammar will go straight through to the ISDA grand final.

4. Barker v Scots

Match of the round which promises to be entertaining. Barker are a strong outfit but so are Scots given their undefeated run. Both teams boast state speakers, so it will come down to the strength of their respective benches. The outcome doesn’t really matter given their impending loss in the semis but should be good to watch nonetheless. My tip is Scots.

Pymble and Kincoppal had 4 wins. Pymble's margin was apparently 2 against Kincoppal's 0. Pymble therefore finished 3rd and so as D3 should not have debated St Aloysius last night but rather Shore.

Surely the semi final involving Scots/Barker could be rescheduled so that the state team speakers could make the debate.

I can recall multiple occasions in the past of rescheduled ISDA out rounds on account of missing speakers on NSW duty, providing both schools agree to the rescheduling.

I personally feel that we as a community should look very harshly on any school who rejected such a postponement in order to give themselves a greater chance of winning by weakening their opponents.

Because it’s semi I imagine it would add significant expense to the competition. And students have other commitments.

I entirely agree with you however that if a school has no valid reason to reschedule or confects a fake reason that that is in very, very poor taste.

That bridge is a while away, a lot of underdog teams won across pretty much every division last night - things aren’t set in stone.

I’m not talking about rescheduling the whole semis to be clear, in the past when it’s happened the rest of the semi’s ran as usual and then the Senior A semi happened early next week.

And obviously yes I agree if they confect a fake reason, that’s very poor, but I’m talking specifically about rescheduling on account of the NSW team commitments.

Regardless, I don’t see this being an issue, in all bar one case in the past where this has happened (that I know of), the schools have shown good sportsmanship and rescheduled, so hopefully we won’t have an issue and we’ll be able to have semi finals that reflect the best of NSW schools debating.

Also with a Scots v Barker quarter, we know we will have at least one state team speaker in a semi.

No underdogs won in Senior A, maybe Cranbrook. We are guaranteed 1 state speaker in the semi. Whilst it would be nice to reschedule I just don’t think it will happen as ISDA admin has struggled this year.
