This has just been published from a South African player's viewpoint, which I found really interesting. Full doc can be obtained here.

Tidbits

Howver, with the exception of one Springbok who supported the developmental function of the Currie Cup, all players interviewed were in support of a revived Currie Cup as South Africa's premier domestic competition, with one overarching qualification: the Currie Cup should provide a direct pathway for the top teams to qualify for participation in greater club competitions in Europe, such as the current Heineken Champions Cup (and Challenge Cup for non-semi-finalists).

According to one Springbok, who has signed an overseas deal since being interviewed, such an arrangement would serve two functions: enhancing the stature of the Currie Cup domestically and globally, and increasing revenues from European broadcasting deals that could see top players staying in South Africa well into their senior careers.
In Super Rugby's current format, travel, long tours and spacing of by-weeks are common concerns. But, players mostly "love" playing in the tournament, primarily due to the different challenges New Zealand, Australian and Argentinian sides pose to South African teams.
