SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) 2023 General Chat

This isn’t true. Can’t remember who it was but one of the journalists wrote at the time about the super round.

They said NZRU own the Super Rugby IP because they set up the current competition (it’s a contentious thing at Rugby Australia hence new independent board coming in). They commisioned TEG who sold it to the Victorian government for a multi-year deal as they were the highest bidder. This is where the Bart Campbell controversy over the year started, as he’s both on the NZRU board and his personal business is affiliated with the company. Silver Lake also has TEG links, personally have no issue with TEG as they are Aus/NZ largest provider for major events.

No Australian team received compensation for the week as they were all on an away week, hence the only teams compensated were NZ teams, I have no idea how much they were compensated and also how it was received from the Aus Super Rugby teams.

The Rebels on the weekend were far from happy with the relationship as they were given many limitations on what they can do, they were even rejected the possibility of playing a ‘b’ team against Moana after their fixture was cancelled due to Covid. They were far from impressed from the surrounding fan experience with almost nothing on offer, I suspect this year will be different as Rugby Australia slowly coming into the tent. At the time there was sense of easy cash grab with no Aus teams benefitting (who knows if true or not) and the care factor from the decision makers low.

Hopefully the independent commission solves some of these decisions
Found this from the Georgina Robinson article at the time

“The concept is actually ‘owned’ by New Zealand Rugby, who’ve licensed it out to events company TEG Sport. TEG in turn negotiated a two-year deal with Visit Victoria to bring it to Melbourne, then paid the New Zealand teams who had to surrender home games a flat fee of about $300,000 in compensation for lost gate revenue.”

Ok fair enough, just I heard Marinos talking on it at some stage and said we have got an agreement from NZ to have a super round in Ausralia early in season. I know they are always sold to a sports promotions company though, as they tend to have expertise to run them etc. I surely hope and expect that Aus teams that gave up home gates would be also compensated, would be very very surprised if they weren't. Though to be fair Qld did say a year or 2 back that at suncorp they needed a crowd of 10000 or something to break even. Aus teams would have extra travel costs andaccomadation costs etc as well.

Well Rugby Australia sold it too highest bidder, that's who actually sold the Super round, and for all the right reasons, they wanted it before the NRL/AFL started to give game a boost in Aus (still think it good idea). Think you will find they then compensated NZ and Aus teams that lost home game crowds from what I understood not all NZ teams got compensated as they didn't have home games, and think originally they were getting bugger all as the draw was just done for them all to play in Aus.
Nah, NZ super rugby teams got together and sold one of their home games each to the highest bidder, it was considered an away game for Aussie teams.

Angus Ta'avao has had surgery for his neck injury & will miss SRP (Super Rugby Pacific). Tribe have signed John Ryan (Munster & Ireland) as his replacement.

The kiwi rookies for 2023 together at NZR headquarters, as usual I will be interested to see how far a few of these go.
Big wraps (well a lot from me anyway;)) on Fabian Holland 2nd from right at back, Macca Springer he'sback left (was wing for Tasman, looks good, Peter Lakai next to Springer, No8 fromWellington and Riley Higgins who is between and in front of last 2. Also maybe keep an eye on Noah Holtham, smallish fella in mddle of front row in Crusaders shirt, could be a retty reasonalbe 9 over next few years.

Very touchy-feely.

Reminiscent of a much earlier era ... Clicky Clicky!

When do all the trials start happening? I know the below, what else are the Tahs doing? What about the Rebels and Brumbies?

4 February – Force v Reds @ Perth
11 February – Waratahs v Reds @ Narrabri
16 February – Force v Drua @ TBC QLD

less than 4 weeks until that first game!

Bugger. Was hoping for a trial game in Toowoomba. Used to enjoy driving up for a game then staying overnight or driving up, staying overnight and watching a game next day.

I used to enjoy the preseason games up there when I lived over there to MM, was a good trip up from Brissy and enjoyed seeing what teams looked like.

Tribe have added Mooloos coach Ross Filipo (who will remain in that role) & journeyman Paul Feeney to their coaching staff.

Haven't really seen much of Feeney as a coach WOB, but one or 2 Aucks supporters seemed to be on his wagon on another forum.

I still think we have too many coaches in these teams, I still think a head coach, back and forward coach should be enough. Christ 3 back coaches and 2 forward coaches as well as a head coach is overloading them with too much I think, and we wonder why players don't play 'off the cuff' enough anymore?

(Lol my little rant for the day)

^ yeah, at times you can get into a "too many cooks" scenario but I think at least some of the coaching staff are also involved with the academy side of things & the women where support staff are otherwise thin on the ground.

So they lost a HUGE amount of money

NFL teams each with ~25 coaches:

Give it a few more decades and reckon you'll have similarly deep coaching setups with specialist scrum coach (already exists), lineout + maul coach, breakdown coach, tackling coach, kicking coach, etc...

EDIT: Actually I think the breakdown and/or tackling coach already exists in the NH club scene.

EDIT v2: Here we go.

Yannick Bru will be the [Sharks] breakdown coach for the European competitions. Bru is a former France international hooker and a dual Champions Cup winner with Toulouse.

He has coached at the highest level, as forwards coach for France for five years and five years at Toulouse, before spending the last four years as head coach at Bayonne.

Schmidt seems like the sort to be very into this stuff...

Sadly you're right. Have you ever seen the entourage the Australian Cricket team use to travel with. 40 people warming up out there with only 11 players.

I believe it was scaled back due to cost and also the dilution of the team environment. NFL teams are an outlier with 48 players active for each game and the absurd money spent on that product.
