Sydney Subbies 2025

Numberthree

Frank Nicholson (4)
I think Petershams pride and desire to show Subbies shouldn’t have dropped them is going to hurt them. There lower grades struggled in Div 2 last year and there depth will be rested back in Div 1.
I don't think it's a "prove them wrong" thing. They had a terrible coaching situation and the culture had gone bad. They now have good coaching, new leadership and have worked very hard to set standards and expectations for players. They feel that they are in a position to build on this year and want to give div 1 a crack. Yes they were weak in 3s and 4s and need to build depth next year. Maybe they're wrong and it won't work out, but they have plenty of people who know that it's like to be in div 1, they're going in with eyes wide open.

so DIV2 is
Forest
Newport
UNSW
St Pats
Briars
Sydney Irish
+ Hills

surely DIV 2 cannot be 6 teams again.
100% they can’t leave it as 6 teams and given Hills dominance in the club champs with 1 less team than everyone and the fact they had a Halligans the majority of the year they should be the team to move up.

Hills 2nd Grade are simply too strong for the club to stay in 3rd Division.

They should go up and Div 3 could be: LCOI, Beecroft, Hornsby, Knox, Hawkesbury Valley, Redfield, Renegades? How to solve for Colts if the latter 3 clubs listed here don’t have one - they would have 2 Grades though?

Let's not lump Renegades in with everyone else there before we've had a preseason ;)

Also Redfield could probably get a Colts side together based on this year's crop but maybe not with two Grades right now.

Separate Friday nights colts comp. Looks like its getting almost too hard to make colts a requirement for div structuring.

Agreed it is difficult. And frustrating while certain Premier clubs stack Colts sides 5 deep.

Friday night is an interesting concept but logistically difficult to ask small clubs to front up 2 days in a row. Would need to be double headers at each club's ground to generate an incentive to host.

Yep just copy paste the system from hunter rugby 4th grade.

Gordon apparently had 150 colts training on their days this week. what is the sense in that! for 3 grades!

They have a track record of loading up there team sheets with enough reserves for another 1-2 teams on top of there 3 grades. It can’t be a good outcome for these players who are sitting on the bench each week regardless of how great the program is.

As these Colts programs across Shute and Subbies start to get bigger and bigger and Hoover up all the colts available something needs to be done to ensure clubs are dual registering there extra players with smaller clubs or running additional sides in slots of clubs that may not have a colts team.

And they will scream "DON'T PUNISH US FOR OUR SUCCESS!"

Followed by "WHY DON'T YOU GET YOUR OWN DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT FOR YOURSELF?!"

To which I will scream back "SURE, GIVE ME $200k TO HELP WITH THIS YOU ****S!"

;)

I am told by a third party that one Premier side get to a point in preseason where they tally up what they have, and inform the guys beyond the number required* that they are cut. This seems reasonable, provided it is followed up with a recommendation of other clubs in the area to play for.

*which is probably still enough for 4 Colts sides tbf.

I suspect a lot of these guys sitting on the Colts 4 bench will simply be there for the beers and not really care about rugby. Which is fine but it paints a bad picture for the code.

Not that I think Gordon need the help, but I wonder if any of the 150 were Eastwood last year?

Toward the end of the season they had about 70 Colts at training so it might shrink a bit.

$500 club rego fee's to just be part of the beer squad seems silly, but kids nowadays nothing surprises really.

apparently a large number of players from 2 different clubs and graduating juniors from different clubs. eg heard one of their 3rd colts coaches is the merrylands juniors u18s coach and has taken the whole squad with him

I guess the question really is how many of the estimated 150 will last?

The first couple of weeks training at high intensity might put a few hopefuls off. Hopefully they go looking for other gigs at local clubs like Chatswood.

So with both Two Blues and Merrylands in their immediate area, they'd choose to drive across town to play footy.

Look, Eastern Suburbs clubs stripping Western Sydney is a trope at this point, and a pretty tired one, but that's peak.
