If you have / had been involved with a) any junior club trying to serve a beer on a Friday night, b) any Subbies match on a Saturday afternoon, c) had sons (or daughters) undertaking bar work to earrn a quid - you would comprehend that it is not perverse as such - it is called the Responsible Service of Alcohol - and the local wallopers take a REALLY dim view of things if caught out - to the extent of fines etc. Fortunately, or unfortunately - that is what is expected of people under RSA these days.
I actually feel kinda sorry for Mr Phipps - if it had been anyone else on this forum - I doubt that it would have made the front page of the SMH....except for maybe Dismal P ?? And it was his bucks night....how many of our fellow forum readers have done something stupid on their "night of nights" ...and not ended up being outed as such ??

In a busy pub it's incredibly difficult/often impossible to tell if a person is drunk until it's too late. It's just a stupid arrangement born of a stupid mentality where someone else is always to blame.

And how often do pubs and bartenders actually get fined under RSA. I would suggest not a huge amount.
I don't think it is unreasonable to put some onus on the bar and barstaff to show some responsibility towards how much alcohol they serve someone.
Prior to RSA existing the only reason a bar would cut someone off was because they thought the person would cause the bar trouble.
I don't think it has anything to do with always wanting to blame someone else. It has substantially reduced alcohol related violence and hospitalisations over a long period of time.
So Chris Whitaker looks set to be signed as an assistant coach for 2019 with the view that him or Cron will become head coach in 2020.

We did not lose Ponga to league. Apparently he had been signed up by Brisbane Lions on a four year contract, he had been on their books from the age of 15 apparently, according to a report in today's SMH. Anyway, if he ever does decide to play our game, he will undoubtedly aspire to be an All Black, not a Wallaby.
Crichton, from what I can discern, was also always in big demand in league, and we all know what that means. Big bucks from an early age.
We cannot, and should not, try to match this.
