Without wanting to be seen to be condoning such behaviour (which I don't) - if they were that p*ssed - what the hell were the bar staff doing serving them in the first place ??!!

It's a pretty perverse outcome where bartenders have to take personal responsibility for the intoxication levels of their patrons.

Ok it's real real stupid, and there no excuse, let's just hope there is a slap on the wrist as there should be, he gets one hell of a bollocking from ARU, NSWRU, His missus etc etc, and perhaps we should move on. In no way playing down the stupidity of it, but neither do we need to dwell on it.

Phipps just getting into the right mindset for playing at Brookie. Hoping none of the forwards follow suit and do a Hoppa' in a ruck.

Sorry Derpus,
If you have / had been involved with a) any junior club trying to serve a beer on a Friday night, b) any Subbies match on a Saturday afternoon, c) had sons (or daughters) undertaking bar work to earrn a quid - you would comprehend that it is not perverse as such - it is called the Responsible Service of Alcohol - and the local wallopers take a REALLY dim view of things if caught out - to the extent of fines etc. Fortunately, or unfortunately - that is what is expected of people under RSA these days.

I actually feel kinda sorry for Mr Phipps - if it had been anyone else on this forum - I doubt that it would have made the front page of the SMH....except for maybe Dismal P ?? And it was his bucks night....how many of our fellow forum readers have done something stupid on their "night of nights" ...and not ended up being outed as such ??

Bartendered all through uni, play subbies, no kids as yet. I don't at all agree with the abrogation of personal responsibility for levels of intoxication in a bar. You choose to get pissed. It's no defense in criminal law so why should the onus be reversed in a civil situation?

In a busy pub it's incredibly difficult/often impossible to tell if a person is drunk until it's too late. It's just a stupid arrangement born of a stupid mentality where someone else is always to blame.

And how often do pubs and bartenders actually get fined under RSA. I would suggest not a huge amount.

I don't think it is unreasonable to put some onus on the bar and barstaff to show some responsibility towards how much alcohol they serve someone.

Prior to RSA existing the only reason a bar would cut someone off was because they thought the person would cause the bar trouble.

I don't think it has anything to do with always wanting to blame someone else. It has substantially reduced alcohol related violence and hospitalisations over a long period of time.

Agree to disagree.

You know what else would substantially reduce alcohol related violence and hospitilizations? banning alcohol. Hell, lets just cut to the chase and lock everyone in their homes. For their own good, you know?

Anyway getting off track here.

I watched Helu at schoolboy level and he is a very exciting prospect. Big prop with a massive running game (think Tongan Thor) who was easily best on ground when NZ played AUS schools in 2016. Of course the Waratahs have a number of young props coming through and given he hasn't played for a couple of years he's not going to be straight into the mix but he is definitely the sort of schoolboy prodigy that we don't want to lose to league in the same way we lost Crichton, Kalyn Ponga etc.

We did not lose Ponga to league. Apparently he had been signed up by Brisbane Lions on a four year contract, he had been on their books from the age of 15 apparently, according to a report in today's SMH. Anyway, if he ever does decide to play our game, he will undoubtedly aspire to be an All Black, not a Wallaby.

Crichton, from what I can discern, was also always in big demand in league, and we all know what that means. Big bucks from an early age.

We cannot, and should not, try to match this.
