I agree with Banks, but not sold on Maddocks. He has glitches in his defense. I'd prefer Petaia over Maddocks, but both behind Banks

I would definitely have Petaia on end of year spring tour but perhaps too early for rugby championship. Age should never be a barrier as you are good enough you are old enough!

Reiko Ioane is the only teenager to debut for NZ since Lomu in 1994.

Ok when I say always, Reiko who I was obviously alluding too. Anyone think the stage was too big for him when he debut?

Petaia can be our Reiko Ioane... obviously Reiko is surrounded by some amazing talent, you can hide a teenager amongst all the other all blacks and for the wobbs to win we need all 15 guys on field to be firing.

But the eye test when you look at Petaia. He might of put on 10kg of muscle so far since he made his debut. He is definitely a man amongst men.

Petaia seems like a good young prospect, but I would also agree that the RC is too soon for him.............

And not because of his age, but because he’s not good enough yet and there are better performing players ahead of him.

Ioane dominated at under 20 level and was a star in a bad Super Rugby side.

I think Petaia is promising but he is a full year younger and a Super Rugby season behind Ioane when he made his debut and hasn't had the same impact so far.

Petaia will play for the Wallabies but using Ioane as the example would suggest that it would be better to be a year away.

The Wallabies tend to debut players earlier out of necessity and I think Petaia will be no different.

Yeah only problem is Reiko is one of the best wingers in the world and Petaia isn't ;)

He is not in the same class as Ioane who only really only got his early test start because has jet shoes

Wing is one of the few places teenagers are good enough to debut because raw natural ability like speed and agility is often more impactful than guile accrued through experience.

Its a reason why Banks should get a gig at some point, he has Jet shoes, sniffing out an opportunity or snuffing one out. speed kills..

I thought slipper played well after a decent stint out for well known reasons.

I found it interesting he was not visible on ground after fans came onto pitch to talk to players but surely he deserves a place in rugby as life situation is things happen and he has paid the price for some difficult personal circumstances and unwise choices but deserves a second chance given part service to oz rugby and fact extenuating circumstances. It would be uncomfortable for most oz rugby fans I suspect if not given that opportunity as I think within reason most accept people deserve second chances.

He was there. As it got settled, he was called away from the fence for an interview. Which took a bit of time. When he was done he retired to the back. I was trying to get the chance for a chat but it didn't happen. All in all though he has faced the music and the press in the run through to this game.

Cheika seems to want to make certain that Slipper gets his second chance. Thorn is another matter.

Newly formed/merged Sydney NRC side playing couple of games out of Leichardt and concord oval. They are both great grounds to watch footy out of in the suburbs. Hopefully those attending Leichardts trial game realised that and show up at Sydney NRC games at leichardt / concord etc as great footy and reasonable crowd makes for much better atmosphere.

That's your construct, but we know that you are the high priest of naysayers.

Oh I think he's right, my enthusiasm is with you, wam puts in a countermeasure of "at no cost" and it's fair enough. That was a great success, and they are few and far between, but it did come without cost.

FWIW I would have been happy to pay somewhere between $30 - $45 for entry. Leave the kids free though.

Probably only free because it was put together at fairly short notice.

Significantly, I note that it was a Michael Cheika initiative to which RA acquiesced rather than an RA initiative.

More toward the $30 than the $45. I agree with keeping the kids free.

The large crowd does present a few learnings. It certainly surprised me.

I've always thought that people are looking for meaning in sporting fixtures. Whether that's two top teams fighting for a finals spot (eg Swans vs Pies) or a clash of traditional rivals etc etc. The narrative is important to draw people in.

One of my issues with Super Rugby in recent seasons has been the lack of meaning or narrative. In any game it's hard to decipher who the teams are, where they are from, how they stand on the ladder, what the game means on the grander scheme of things.

And yet here is a game with no meaning at all. It's a trial game, with no trophy or competition points up for grabs. It wasn't even a meaningful selection trial, as today's squad indicates. And they get 10k.

I think it's hard to underestimate the value of free tickets here. It screams convenience- no online portals, no organisation, no waiting in queues, and of course no cash required. Just turn up on time and you're in.

Groups of two or three become groups of five or six. Mates, wives, kids tag along. We saw it with the Sydney 7s in the first year where tickets were just $20. They filled the stadium twice in two days.

Leichhardt Oval isn't that easy to get to, either. It's impossible to park, and not super easy to reach by public transport. It does have a great hill though, and is the perfect size for a game of is type.

Bravo to Cheika and RA for doing this. It worked on the field, and it was a smash hit off the field too. Let's hope it pays dividends in two weeks time, too.

Don't discount the novelty factor. I think doing it annually as a tune up between Super Rugby and the Bledisloe is a great idea and can be a charity fundraiser but I don't think there are a huge number of lessons that can be learned from it.

Hold that every week as a free event and I think the crowd would rapidly dwindle.

Of course thats why we never have the same 2 teams just slug it out ever weekend. I think move it arpund sydney charge 20 -30 bucks for adults.. get tge players to stay after for photos and action the jerseys or give them out too kids.. nexts years super jersey should be some kinda 5 team mashed together and the wallabies in a traditional aborignal jersey.
