Wallabies 2020

One thing I still can't get my head around was Matt Taylor's appointment.

Scotland's world cup campaign was disastrous in 2019.

He seemed more of an experience hire simply because he'd been over in Europe for so many years.

During Townsends time in charge of Scotland (2017-2019) they leaked tries but generally played excellent attacking rugby. Once they got rid of Taylor & then brought in Steve Tandy, it was almost like overnight they had an international class defense again.

I recall Castle was lining up Jake White as a caretaker coach in 2018 to take the Wallabies through to the WC? It would've been interesting to see how that situation might've played out in retrospect..
That wasn't actually their plan.

He was also Scotland's defensive coach from 2012 to 2017 and Glasgow's when they won the Pro12 in 2015 so maybe the poor defensive period with Scotland had more to do with the focus of the head coach than anything else?

How did Tandy go with the Tahs in 2019?

10th most tries conceded out of 15 teams for an equal 12th place finish on the ladder.

Rodha seems to be arguing that we should have used Steve Tandy's performance at the job he took after he left Australia to hire him for the Wallabies before he left Australia.

Seems like a pretty poor use of time travel technology to me.

All I know is that Tandy is extremely highly rated in rugby circles, as head coach he's won titles in 2 different Welsh leagues, as well as winning Pro14 title in 2012 as their head coach. Co-incidentally, I just came across an article today that mentioned him.

Having parted company with the Ospreys after six years as head coach, he joined the NSW Waratahs in November 2018.

He took up the post of defence coach with the Sydneysiders and received rave reviews for his work, as the main architect of the their ‘blue wall’.

Under the former flanker’s tutelage, the ‘Tahs had the best tackle success rate in Super Rugby at 86.7 per cent.

His efforts saw him linked with a number of jobs and, last December, it was announced he would be joining Scotland as their defence coach.

A honest, hard worker, it’s been great to see Tandy get his career back on track, having had no full-time position after leaving the Ospreys, who he had guided to the PRO14 title in 2012 and then two subsequent semi-finals.

they also conceded 61 over two games to the Sunwolves.

The Crusaders also did not, understandably, turn up in Sydney for that particular match.

Maybe Tandy would have been Rennie's first choice but by the time he was appointed in November 2019, Tandy was already too far advanced in his discussions with Scotland where he was appointed in December 2019?

The concept that Rugby Australia should have hired Tandy after his 2019 Waratahs season potentially before they'd hired a new head coach is ridiculous.

The timing was never there.

I also think there's a significant upside bringing back a highly credentialed Australian coach into the fold as an assistant when we have a foreign head coach.

the wrong ones though! Link and Jim McKay were the real MVPs of that 2011 Reds season, the Red's had the best functioning attack, yet only the 5th best defense in 2011.

anyway, the sooner McKellar joins the Wallabies set-up the better, Rennie is merely a caretaker coach until 2023 to bring through & develop the current crop of promising young former Australian U-20 talent. wisemantel is tactically brilliant & should be with the Wallabies set-up for as long as possible especially with McKellar set to succeed Rennie in 2024.

Imagine the rugby IQ between those two, McKellar and Wisemantel are two of the most tactically excellent rugby coaches in Australia. Rennie is great on team culture & individual player management but McKellar and Wisemantal are the most astute rugby minds in the country, they are very shrewd tactically and need to be retained by the ARU at all costs. I believe those two set to inherit the matured, test-hardened U-20 talent that Rennie will bring through for them by 2024, can win the 2027 World Cup with that core group of players.

Shit, Rennie has only coached 4 games and we’re already discussing who the next coach will be in 4 years time..

To be fair on that point I thought Rennie had commented specifically on that point - he was here for 4 years and his intent was to have a coaching group of Australians with the credentials to take the top job.

Just another reason I think Rennie was an outstanding choice.

Precisely, I was just going to touch on that. Rennie was lining up McKellar as his forwards coach with eventually the aim of him being his successor after the 2023 World Cup. McKellar opted out and wanted to concentrate on the Brumbies but it still appears the powers at be are very much grooming McKellar to be the Wallabies head coach post Rennie. Dan has only coached at a professional level for 3 years but come 2024 he'll have 6 years experience (with probably 2-3 Super Rugby titles added to his CV) so he'll be ripe and ready for the gig, should he apply.

"The ideal scenario is that the next coach is Australian and there needs to be some thought around that. If there is someone ready to go after the (2023) World Cup, that may be in the best interests of Australian rugby."

Pandaram has an article in The Australian seemingly claiming Koroibete wants out of Australia. I’m not a subscriber so can’t actually read the article. Anyone else able to comment on this? The Aus negative pieces seem to have picked up noticeably since the 9/Stan news, so I’ll be taking it with a big grain of salt until I hear otherwise.

He has received a bigger offer from Japan, RA won’t release him.

But yeah, the negative narrative from News Corp press has increased in the past few days
