TRC2021 - Wallabies v Boks @ Suncorp 18/09

Yeh still think back to Rennie after last game against AB’s saying he thought heading in right direction and just needed next few weeks to prove it. Like I said I was so skeptical when he said that but boy showed he really knew what he was doing and had the confidence to deliver on it which done with two wins in a row with Boks.

myself and obviously others way underestimated how good a coach Rennie is. In awe of him given he basically projected this and then delivered on it.

The Ab tests would have been WAAAY different had it not been for those quick one-two scores by the Abs. Momentary brainfarts. Missed tackles in the first test. Lack of patience leads to intercepts or bad decision-making on attack. Against the boks your mob was patient.

It's almost as if the Wobs lose their nerve against the AB's. There is a defininite mental hurdle that needs to be overcome. The AB's are a little bit in the Wobs heads. It needs to be overcome because you are not that far behind them.

Quade is super composed. He could be an absolute revelation. I am pleasantly surprised and have to admit that I am enjoying seeing him back. He is a hell of a rugby player.

They looked tired and almost disinterested.

Not taking anything away from the Wallabies. Smart rugby thoroughly deserved to beat dumb rugby. Been saying this all along: hold your own physically against the Boks and get ahead on the score. We have no plan B to start scoring out of structured play. We score tries with brute force or on the counter.

Early in his career, Pollar was a wonderful running 10. Strong, takes on the line, great passing both ways, great offloads. Looks like it has been coached out of him.

The last 20 minutes with Finn Russel at 10 against the Lions showed that had the Lions played more adventurous rugby, I reckon they would have won 3 zip.

The Boks have been worked out. Rennie saw what the Lions did that worked. Smart man. We have great players. Rassie needs to hit reset and we need to play more positive rugby.
I wouldn't be too worried. You guys are overflowing with talent.

Just need to get the coaching and strategy right. I'm curious - why didn't they bring a guy like Jantjies for a plan B off the bench?

That shit was reffing incompetence in the extreme. A real contrast to the calm clarity of last week (albeit slow). They nearly panicked themselves into a red for a regulation tackle.

And then a no-arms shoulder driven into the head of a prone player is a yellow?

Probably come across as petulant but WR (World Rugby) have a real issue with the quality of reffing at the moment.
I don't think is specific to this ref. Look it up. There are a number of clear directives this year. ANY head contact, however marginal will be punished. Add that that the wrap that was borderline and 9/10 times this will be a card. There have been quite a few like this so far this year.

The conversation between the ref and the TMO. Coming down from the red had absolutely nothing to do with wrapping arms. If the head contact had occurred at time as shoulder charge, it would have been a red. You hear the ref talk about the lack of mitigating factors when originally discussing the red:

REF: From what I can see the player was never legal because he leads with his arm (indicates the same arm of the shoulder charge) by his side directly into the contact. There is a shoulder contact but simultaneously there is also a head-to-head contact. Now because the player is upright and never making an attempt to make a legal tackle, I can’t see any mitigation.
TMO: I agree with that.
REF: So with that being the case, it’s going to be a red card to number 6 yellow.

Long pause

TMO: Are you happy that it’s simultaneous with the shoulder and head-on-head?
REF: OK. One more time show me.
TMO: With that other angle I feel like the shoulder hits first before the head.
REF: OK. That’s fine. Shoulder first, then the head contact so we’re bringing it from the red down to the yellow.
It was similar in the Koroibete case where the statement from the judiciary read:

“Having reviewed all the evidence the committee deemed that Marika Koroibete’s tackle … initially made shoulder to shoulder contact at the fifth minute of the game,”

“Subsequently, through the impact, any contact to the chest and neck was incidental by Koroibete. Therefore World Rugby’s head Contact Process was not met due to mitigating factors and the act of foul play was secondary

Nothing I've seen about either of these incidents indicated any wrapping of the arms having any mitigating factor at all. In both cases, it was about where the initial contact was made.

And the subsequent shoulder to the head?

Exactly.

Dunno what they do now. Experimenting against the Blacks is hardly a good idea. Janjoes has always played well off the bench against the ABs so I hope he gets a shot.

We need some changes. Mostert looks exhausted. Duane is not fit. Time for a change at 15. Faf is in poor form and Reinach was great against Argies,

erm that is my point. any head contact is going to get punished. There is no mitigation.
My point is there was no consistency. They were pushing for a red for shoulder to shoulder contact - then somehow the shoulder direct to the head of a prone player was yellow. Madness.

That's not what happened. The ref thought the head contact was simultaneous to the shoulder contact which is why he originally said red. It was the TMO who suggested that it was shoulder contact first and therefore the downgrade to the yellow.

Reinach is great. Is Kolbe back? Not having De Jager and Synman also hurt. Your replacement lock isn't the same caliber.

I dread to think what the ABs could do to the Boks...
Will be interesting. The boks don’t have that unique ability to capitulate and give away 20pts in the space of 15minutes. That’s been a quality the wallabies have excelled at more than anyone else. The boks will lose but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s closer.

PSDT is a blindside, SAF and ARG have the flankers numbers the other way around, Kolisi is the open side. But yes, I think Hooper would make a World XV. Koroibete is the other that probably would right now too. That’s 2, we need 3 more according to Bob.
You have to consider that the quote by Bob Dwyer is 30 years old and prior to SA’s re-admission back to international rugby. The talent was a lot more concentrated.

Plus good players look like World beaters in great teams.

The cards to Swinton and the SA reserve back rower are a little open to interpretation but this incident is straight up thuggery and de Koch needs to face serious consequences. No place for it in the game.

Really cannot see clearly from the footage shown that there was intentional contact to the eye. It'd be a big stretch for a charge to be brought. That said it is hard to work out what he was trying to do at the time when his hand contacted Cooper's face.

No one seems to worried about it but it looks clear to me on the second swipe. We saw the result with Cooper down for treatment and clearly distressed. De Koch very lucky but one to watch in future games. Attacking the face of an opponent is surely reason for a send off?

I'm using a major generalisation here, but do you think the Boks have suffered from playing few tests together until the Lions tour, and then played NH rugby?

The Boks have no excuse for their fitness. They've been in camp months at this point with tests against Georgia, 3 X Lions, and fronting up for the "A" side as well.

I probably didn't add enough emphasis to the second part: playing against teams that play 10-man rugby.

If I was their director of rugby they'd be permanently in high altitude camp in Lesotho. Except 10 and 15, they can hang out with Naas Botha when he gets a beach shack at Jefferey's Bay.

I can only agree. Eye gouge or not, it is an off the ball incident involving striking the head, face actually - a gouge was always a risk
