Without a doubt it’s a highly contested role with the Tahs, which is a good place to be. Coleman is spoiled for choice and the competition for spots will hopefully drive all three to play better rugby. I think it’s a bit harsh to talk about dropping Donaldson after one substandard game. I also think it’s all hypothetical at the moment as I doubt Harrison would be starting first game after an injury and Edmed (to me anyways) seems to be slightly behind the other two in his senior level development at present.

I feel like both should be in the 23 and probably 15. My preference would be Harrison at 10 and Donaldson at 15.

Edmed is a tough nut, good in contact. Can play 12. Can kick. A good bench option at the moment.
We need that second playmaker, if the centres are somewhat settled, but both are basically ball runners, then Harrison at 10 and Donaldson at 15 is logical

I am not sure about Donaldson at 15 as not sure he has the electric speed or x factor at the back, assuming that is what we need for our full back. But also I think there is healthy competition for 10 from all Harrison, Edmed and Donaldson where probably hard to predict who might end up being the starting 10 by end of the season as all talented and doing ok.
Alex Newsome doesn't provide that either so certainly not a reason to discount Donaldson.

Of course, he is a talent. All three options have factors they could improve. He’s behind the other 2 in terms of experience at present in my opinion. That could easily change. Competition for spots is a good thing.
Yeah Newsome is a place holder with 15 a spot in need of an upgrade

That being said, he has done very well in the first two games this season. And if he plays well against the Brumbies, do we still then think we need an upgrade? How many good games will it take for us to say that we don't need an upgrade any more? I wouldn't put him on the wing but he has been excellent at fullback.
Note: My opinion on Newsome has radically changed from last year. I would not have retained him in the squad. That either means I was a lousy judge of his abilities or he has really stepped up (probably the former).

I thought he was average on Saturday, he is solid and enthusiastic but lacks any threat. And at this level he needs to be error free, all the time to be first choice
And we have an upgrade coming, Beale will be there next season

Fatprop is saying that for Newsome to keep his spot at fullback for the long term he needs to be error free because he doesn't offer any of the upside that other players do.
The best he can be is a safe option.

Wow.
I would rather observe and see all the positives that players offer to their teams and so far, two games into the season, I think Newsome is going well, in a position he did not play last year.
I suppose though, he makes one mistake and Fat Prop would have to drop him.
Ditto for the whole Waratah team.
They need John ‘Nobody’ Eales in their team, as he would be the only one playing by the end of the year, because Nobody is perfect!

Newsome has been fine but we have seen a lot of him over a long time.
He's not a great player and ultimately I think we can do better.
He doesn't offer a lot of upside so if he is going to keep his spot he needs to be incredibly solid.

He just doesn't have much upside, his "best" is a mediocre passing grade at best.
Beale isn't error free, but his upside is test standard not mediocre Super Rugby level
