Qld Premier Rugby 2022

Wilson

Michael Lynagh (62)
Is he any good?
I've never seen him play but he played U18s for Scotland, U20s for England and has a handful of game for Leicester in the premiership and Northampton in the Championship so he's probably got something to offer. Given he's signed with Leicester Tigers they might be looking to develop him a bit more like they did sending Olowofela to the force.

How about we leave him there and develop our own talent

I don’t get the fixation with going on to develop. If you want to get better, knuckle down and work hard in your home comp. you get better and the comp gets better.
I am all for playing rugby and travelling though which is more about the social comeraderie.

I have no issue if we become destination of choice for a guys in Europe wanting to add something new to their game and kick on to a higher level. As long as it's only ever 1 or 2 at a time I don't have a problem with it. I assume it's more than just travel/social, given the mention of contracts.

Like I said give our kids the contracts

thats why we need to build a rugby program that has room to keep the talent (kids) here.

While we continue to recruit / target "foreign" players it only sends a message home grown talent they are not wanted

Problem is though mate the playing field isn't level in that regard.

Aussie players will keep getting plundered, we're at a distinct disadvantage in that regard. If we can manage to lure back some of the eligible players to help strengthen our competitions, I think you need to take that opportunity.

The simple fact is the homegrown talent pool of players who are interested in committing to rugby is also shrinking. That's nothing to do with them getting the wrong message, it's because we can't compete with overseas teams and the NRL/AFL. We need to fill the gaps somehow.

Since the demise of NRC I have always wondered how we could monetize the Shute Shield and QPR. Not to make it full time professional career type of dollars.
More along the lines of some $$$$ to supplement a student, apprentice or part time worker. If there was the lure of earning 10-20 K a year we might keep a few more in the game. The ones I am targeting are the kids that play junior rep ( u14,15,18 etc) then give it away totally a year after finishing school.

If these fella hang around then the comp would get more competitive ie improve. Also give the reds ( Super Rugby outfits) more options. Let them develop in week in week out rugby instead of locked away in an academy.

How is young Lancaster any different from Lynagh or clubs giving Fijians a chance in QPR e.g. Dangunu, Seru Uru?

I don’t see any issue in clubs sourcing talent from abroad, particularly if they are going to play for the club fulltime - they could be more beneficial in playing terms than having a Wallaby registered to your club.

It's a free world. As Count Myron Malachi said "Let the pigeons loose!"

It's a bit rich to kick up a stink about players choosing to come out and play here when a significant number of Australian players are playing all over the world.

No problem with them coming here under their own steam to play clubland.

when our unions are so cash strapped it beggars belief we would pay mercenaries to come here when we have plenty of our own stock.

my thought is you only buy in when the cupboard is bare

What if it’s your beloved clubs that are the ones doing the contracting?

didnt realise there was enough money at clubland to be paying players?

If there are clubs out there paying for cattle then they need new business managers because none of them are getting value for money.

New bloke here bit of insight into the dalby/gps/uq trial

This isn’t the first time this has happened gps sent 3’s, 4’s and 5’s out last year to play the wheatman there’s a big connection between the clubs with lots of boys from out that way going to school with blokes from gps and then also playing colts footy while studying before heading back home. Bit of a similar connection with uq for some of these fellas as well.

Dont’t see anything wrong with maintaining and strengthening relationships with grassroots clubs out west it’s beneficial for everyone involved. To people arguing why take away from the reds home game maybe if they showed just a hint of interest in supporting grassroots and prem land they’d get more people to the games. Suburban footy is just a better more exciting brand of footy that the reds can’t compete with

Ability to play anywhere is one component of rugby globalisation. Play and do business in whatever country takes your fancy. Experience the local culture etc. Supply/demand dynamics still dictate the opportunities and the risk/reward for clubs. And does not all have to be on a professional basis. As someone said - "on your own steam".

The next step is formal partnerships between Australian clubs and French/English/Japanese clubs to share resources and IP. I think it would be great for players, coaches and local club competitions alike.

Obviously with the English comp going from September to June, there is going to be a limited share of top liners available, but it is probably the next layer down that would enjoy the experience and the benefits.

Just like the Bulldogs & Rebels partnership locally. Personally, I see more upside than downside. Understand a foreigner could take a local's spot in a team but that can (and does) happen now. It is just not as high profile as a Lancaster or Lynagh.

To strengthen the local comps, I would like to see some overseas players. Maybe cap at 2 players. No guarantee they will always be Premier Grade level.

GPS went through a period during the late 2000s where young Bath Rugby players were coming to Australia and being setup with a billet family and work via sponsors. Steve Meehan was coaching Bath Rugby at the time so that was the connection.

Most of them played a few years of Colts and maybe one season of grades (usually 2nd/3rd grade) before heading home. But once they got home I know a number of them went onto play for the Bath 1st grade (professional) team.

It was great for the club and I know their teammates loved it and a number of GPS players went overseas in the following years to visit them and play a few games of English club rugby during their travels.

It's surely the crux of what makes Rugby so great and popular worldwide. The more the merrier I say!
