NSW Schools Debating 2023

I imagine Aloys, Scots, Joeys, Riverview, Grammar, Knox, Shore and Barker would all have some speakers of interest
Grammar seems to be the most intriguing considering the fact that they are top of Pool B with no state debaters. I would think that they would have some class speakers who you should keep an eye on. Knox also seems to be going well and undoubtedly have speakers to look out for as well.

I remember wasn’t there a list of the people who made state squad, their year and school? I’m not bothered to look for something buried on like page five but if you’re interested you could look for it.
Alexia Rigoni (Not ISDA)
Anhaar Kareem (Not ISDA)
Darshanik Aryal (Not ISDA)
Eamonn O'Loughlin (Aloys)
Helena Piazza (SCEGGS)
Iris Lee (Barker)
Jason Lin (Grammar)
Jehiel Pather (Scots)
Michael Kwak (Shore, but apparently Senior B)
Nara Gong (Not ISDA)
Nikki Han (Queenwood)
Oliver Hoang (Grammar)

This one is the state squad list. Still leaves a lot of mystery. Also would be interested to see speaking positions.
Michael Kwak (Shore), Iris Lee (Barker), Jehiel Pather (Scots) and Michael Kwak (Shore) should be good to see our chances at NSDC. Barker and Scots go against each other in Quarters as well should be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Riverview supposedly has some good speakers, and would be good to see what Grammar has up their sleeves.

There are lots of teams still unaccounted for.

Any ideas of who and where they speak?

Senior B seems to be a very talented lot. I'd say watch out for Grammar. The team that won both the Year 9 and 10 ISDA would be in either Senior A or B, so it would be fair enough to say that they are definitely strong contenders. There are also very strong Riverview and Kambala teams that should provide tough competition, but its hard to tell at this point.
I would agree. Grammar's yr 10 cohort last year managed to win both the yr 10 and yr 9 (last year and two years ago respectively) ISDA comp and are most likely in either Senior Bs or Senior As. Regardless, they seem to be speakers that have a very promising future and are certainly speakers that you should keep on your radar. Kambala senior Bs also seem very strong and will put up a real contest for the ISDA crown this season while Barker and Riverview also seem like good contenders. There could be some underdogs to watch out for as well this season for the Senior Bs. I would watch out for MLC. They were the only team to beat Barker in pool C and supposedly have some high level debaters.

Here are the list of year groups for callbacks (I think it is mostly correct I'm not Sherlock holmes). These could be some rising stars. If anyone could fill in the gaps that would be cool.

I believe William Ellis (Yr 11 I think) from Grammar also received a state callback but the rest seems to be accurate. The year 10 debaters seem very promising.

ISDA PREDICTIONS
Side 1
Octo 1: Aloys v PLC - PLC has some strong speakers, but as a team they have not fired. So 90% chance Aloys wins.

Octo 2: Knox v Cranbrook - Cranbrook upset a strong Joeys (Missing a speaker to LCO), however, Knox is quite strong as well. 70% Chance Knox wins

Octo 3: Joeys v Queenwood - Queenwood has a State Squad speaker, however Joeys have been in great from ever since last year GPS. 80% Joeys win.

Octo 4: Riverview v St Andrews - Unlucky to St Andrews, this Riverview team is incredibly strong. 95% View.
Side 2
Octo 5: Grammar v Monte - Grammar is traditionally strong, should be easy for them. 90% Grammar

Octo 6: Shore v Kincoppal - Shore has a state speaker, who is apparently speaking in Snr B according to others. To keep him out of Snr B probably means their Snr A is solid. - 70% Shore Win

Octo 7: Scots v Ravo - Undefeated Scots vs Ravo, would take quite something for Scots to lose this one… 95% Scots

Octo 8: Barker v SCEGGS - This is definitely the hardest octo since both Barker SCEGGS are looking strong. Barker’s state speaker ought to be the tiebreak. 60% Barker win
QF 1: Aloys v Knox
Both teams look quite strong, Aloys had 3 speakers receive state callbacks, so in a very close quarter, I’d give it to Aloys.
55% Aloys

QF 2: Riverview v Joeys
GPS Preview, both teams are looking good and potentially are in contention to win GPS. Both had callback speakers.

However, Joeys is on a margin of 17 vs Riverviews 12. So 60% to Joeys
QF 3: Grammar v Shore - Grammar any day of the week.

QF 4: Scots v Barker
State speakers are going head to head in what should be a very, very close and entertaining debate. Both Li and Panther are reportedly very solid responsive speakers, so it might be a case of who speaks after who.

Very very hard to call 50/50
SF1: Joeys v Aloys
Joeys did just as well in a significantly harder pool.

80% Joeys
SF2: Scots/Barker v Grammar
Unfortunately, Scots/Barker lose their state speaker, meaning it should be an easy Grammar win.

95% Grammar
Final: Joeys vs Grammar

Honestly depends on the topic who wins this showdown. Joeys are the current GPS champions so would go with them.

Are you able to share the win margins ? Might give us an indication of where teams are at.

Very interesting. Pool D - never seen anything like that spread. 2 teams qualify on 0 margin and Scots nearly full marks.

Interesting. Worth noting that some schools will get a home debate since they are hosting because they usually prioritise schools hosting their own teams regardless of where they place. SCEGGS hosts Barker and PLC hosts Aloys. Not sure if that makes a difference. Do we know if you get to veto topics this year in finals this year?
I’d hope the adj’s assigned would be of sufficient quality to not be influenced or biased towards schools that are hosting. Someone said they’ve seen the roster and they are pretty good.

With the finals draw now released, I’m tipping an Aloys v Scots final, with Aloys to take the chocolates.

From what I’ve observed and heard, this year group is significantly weaker than last year, however these two teams appear to be the strongest analytically.

I think Aloys superior strength across the bench will give them the leg up in the final.
