Wallabies 2023

Slim 293

Stirling Mortlock (74)
189cm and 118kg to 180 and 100.

I don't agree, but it's relatively apparent that there's some specific gameplan he's wanting to implement whereby (at least in his mind) selecting the players most capable of fitting those roles (particularly when it comes to size) will be more successful than selecting the best raw "performers".

Like Vunivalu, Eddie clearly sees some potential in Uelese and thinks he can get the best out of him…

It’s certainly not a pick on form, which has been lacking for around five years now.

Foley is a known quantity and I suspect will still get a journeyman berth to France. It looks like Eddie wants to see more of both Gordon and Donaldson to work out which one to take.

Which overseas pick would you drop for him?

I guess it depends on whether this is a "warm up" for the world cup?

Maybe it is good for him to be given a true test of his abilities and attitude prior to the WC?
E.J. has said multiple times that it's full-send every game in TRC and Bled. Expect the only true 'warm up' to be against France.

Had a crack at a breakdown of players with lots of Super Rugby caps, currently in Australia, not selected in any of the squads today, excluding long-term injuries. Likes of Anstee, Latu, Daugunu, Edmed, Muirhead, Lolesio, Debreczini, HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes), Kaitu'u, McInerney, Pollard, Ryan Smith, Blyth, Stewart, Jahrome Brown, Vailanu, Alex Mafi, Hosea, Kuenzle, Hegarty, Naisarani, Wells

Daugunu is listed in the extra 28 (though I'm pretty sure he's still injured)

Talk about sliding doors moment for Nonggorr.

If Taniela doesn’t get injured last year, Zane probably plays 30mins of Super Rugby all year in 2023 and isn’t anywhere near the Wallabies. Now he’s a chance of going to France, particularly if Taniela isn’t running around at 100%.

Ask me after the Argentina game. Richie Arnold is at this point in time an uncapped 32 year old. It’s also possible there won’t be any need to drop anyone, attrition may well come into play. The point I was making was that it makes sense to leave Foley out at this stage.

I've been impressed by him, said it here a week or two ago

High workrate but pretty limited - he's strong in contact but no kicking, passing or exceptional finishing ability.
His passing is just fine, but his key strength is his work off the ball, he chases hard and works hard to give a a kick receiver options

They are skills underappreciated in aus

That said, I would be amazed if he gets any game time

Lolesio has had a huge fall since that French series. I just don’t think he’s tough enough for Eddie. I’m not saying he’s not tough but compared to Gordon, no contest.

Given there is no back up 12 (Hodge, please!) then Carter Gordon might get a run there at some stage. He’s certainly got the D and the passing/kicking game. And the backrowers EJ (Eddie Jones) has picked can do the barging.

Gordon and Cooper at 12 and 10 might just be the key to unlock Ikitau and the back three with early ball and inside creativity.
