Problem is that even with the blow up of the squad - the talent we put on the park didn't look great and it's not like we left many names at home who would be able to contribute in 2025 or 2027.
For example it's one thing to say we aren't surprised that Donaldson was mediocre at the RWC. But most of us thought Carter Gordon had a pretty damn good Super Rugby season and would be a good addition to the Wallabies. His rawness was definitely exposed but also some of the flaws in his game. He might not be the flyhalf saviour many envisioned.
Same goes for someone like Kerevi whom we all thought would continue to get better with more time on the park. He seemed like a shell of his former self.
Then we have our genuine stars in Tupou and Skelton, who also happen to be our biggest bodies and injuries are piling up. That probably changes their trajectory for the next few years.
Lots to consider...
Bell is one of the few regulars in our team that would get a look in at the top teams.
For all the man love we apply to some players because of state blinkers we have massive deficiencies in lots of players.
Outside Tupou and AAT we have guys that are barely Super Rugby quality at prop. Nongoor doesn’t offer anything, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him not even playing top tier rugby in a few years. Pone is always injured and loves to do stupid things, does he realise just how big he is?
Our locks are the least intimidating in world rugby. Frost is a good athlete but packs the power of a scrum half, Arnold is the catch.com version of his brother.
I like Tom Hooper, McReight is a proven Super Rugby performer and can do a role at international level but I think it’s been shown he won’t dominate like we had all hoped at some stage in recent years, Valetini another that would genuinely be in contention for other teams.
McDermott is close to the worst technical scrum half at the World Cup. He’s so good with the exciting things but so poor at the basics. He doesn’t seem to be developing in game smarts or technical proficiency, hes marginally a better player than he was when he debuted. White is a shadow of the player he was 12months ago. It’s almost like the longer he’s in the Aus system the worse he’s got. I’d give it short odds that Lonergan is the scrum half come Lions series.
Kerevi might be one of those that never return to full fitness after a major injury. Petaia isn’t a 13 (hopefully can move to wing with Marika moving on). Like McDermott it’s almost like he hasn’t improved at all since his debut.
Gordon can’t tactically kick and his accuracy is poor.
Could go on.
