Subbies 2023!

Has it ever been much different though? Only country footy do you find a bit more around reserve grade but even then they get beer money.

You have young guys play U20s with mates but they won’t play Opens.

Yeah, probably not. Maybe kids are quitting at younger ages now though. It'd be interesting to see the number of u/15-18s club teams there are compared to 10 or 20 years ago.

Any meaningful change to pokies legislation in NSW will dry up surplus leagues/RSL club funds and no doubt impact their support of local teams - particularly in rural areas. I have mates that play country union and league. The league is purely for the pay cheque.

With Hornsby and now Penrith looking to land in Subbies next year where do they end up? Might be pushing some higher Div clubs down or being very strong in a Div 4 comp?

Hornsby were running two grades last year, so that lands them in division 4, Penrith had colts so possibly division 3, if they get admitted.
Depends on what happens with St Pats and Petersham.

Notice provided to all clubs yesterday that Petersham and St Pat’s are appealing their relegation at the AGM.

What do we reckon their chances are? And if one or both are successful then what happens!?

Who decides if they are allowed back into Div1? Is this a vote by the Subbies Board or another method?

If the appeals are upheld - does that make an 10 team Div 1?

Penrith lost some games by 100 in John I Dent but also were competitive against teams like Whites and Uni. Might be hard to place in subbies.

They should have done this when they were first knocked out of Shute Shield. Travelling 5 hours every second week to get your arse kicked must have worn very thin very quickly

Will be interesting to see if those in charge want St Pats back or it’s just the keyboard warriors on here running there mouths about it. How much do the Div 1 clubs care about Pats when it might mean a 9 team comp.
I’d say if the Pats motion gets up first then Petersham will get through as they don’t want a 9 team comp like last year. But I’d say more are likely to vote No for Petersham then Pats

We are all still waiting for the reasoning behind Pats regrading

Surely petersham appeal isn't granted. They've been shocking the past couple of years.

Would be great to see Penrith in subbies. Will make for fun trips and will surely strengthen the comp. Always good having another team out west.

I’ll raise you a Forest (finished 7th) and Mosman (finished 8th). Both below Pats, who ran 4 grades, 2 colts and women’s…..
my bad had a look at the club championship.

to that id say, would be pretty hard on forest to be relegated since they had won colts. Maybe if pats end up winning that colts premiership it would be forest instead.

in regards to the whales it would be fair to say they have a substaintial amount of good will built up due to being such a large and succesful club in the past. They had a very off year this year, mainly due to the european exodus, but nest year euro exodus will not be anywhere near as bad. As this years was pretty much a build up of 3 years worth of euro holidayers.

Ok but that then means promotion/relegation turns into a subjective assessment... somebodies opinion as to whether you warrant inclusion or not. I dont see how you can run a competition that way. You're exposed to calls of hypocrisy, corruption and skull duggery.

It's simple. KEPP THE PROCESS OBJECTIVE! Then everybody knows what the rules are and can work to the criteria set in stone. If Mosman had a bad year because they all went to Europe... fine. You can tell us all about it from Div 2. Forrest won the colts? Good, that bodes well for their future, but they finished lower on the Club Champs table.

But besides all of that, there is no way... either objectively OR subjectively that Pats gets demoted. There isn't a single reason that could be justified.

Forgive my ignorance but was Mosman the only club in Subbies affected by a European exodus? Are passports not issued anywhere else?

Part of being a successful club is being able to deal with these inevitable challenges.

I believe Newport have similar issues?

Yeah I can see where you're coming from and you have good points.

I'm just trying to account for the thinking of pats relegation.

Pats were also affected by the 'Euro exodus', so to speak. I'm pretty sure they lost their first grade 9 & 10, among other players, for a large portion of the season.

100% we didn’t do it with Drummoyne the year before and we didn’t do it with Mosman this year. So why should the other clubs take the decision of being demoted when they see other clubs being given a pass.
Clubs will be pushing against demotion now cause they’ve seen clubs fight Subbies and potentially win
