Shame that Qld II is getting belted. I'm curious, is most of that team made up of non GPS players? If so, maybe that highlights that there is still a considerable gulf between GPS and other schoolboy comps in Qld?

Excellent reports by the way Íluvmyfooty'.

Another top report Iluvmyfooty; reading your stuff is like being at the game.

It will be interesting to see who starts for NSW Is tomorrow as it sounds from your reports that 12. Purcell and 13. Roods (ostensibly 4th ranked players being picked for the Ones reserves - though Roods has been injured) are putting in a strong claim for the run on team in the final.

12. Purcell is one of my favourite players - not that I think he is necessarily the best - but because of the way he plays the game. Ditto for 7. Broome and 6. Dempsey in the NSW IIs. I've also become a big fan of winger Tanginoa; so it's good to see that you think he is playing well at the top schools level. I think he'll do well when he leaves school.

I liked Qld player Timu last year in the U/16s as a power runner and he was very hard to stop even when held; so it's good to read he was not an U/16 wonder. I liked your remarks about scrummie Merriman also: I thought he should have been in the NSW Is (with Vaux at 10), but I got a lot of things wrong.

It's good to see your remarks about 1. Lawley who I am a Johnny-come-lately fan of. He reminds me a lot of Gethin Jenkins, the Wales LHP, in his style of playing the game. Let's hope he will be as good as the Welshman one day.

Qld 2 is 75 per cent GPS- just maybe some of those kids are vastly overrated by their school devotees.

The QLD II 4,5,6,8 are all GPS and have been probably the most impressive players in the team. The backline is mostly AIC and has just underperformed, the team doesn't look strong on paper and it's no real surprise that they aren't winning. The GPS teams seemed to have a lot of depth all the way down to GPS III so it's odd that more players weren't selected and now the selectors are paying the price.

Light, have you actually seen a game at these championships?

For that matter, did you see a game at the State champs?

No (plan to tomorrow) and yes. I have seen all the QLD II players before, admittedly the GPS players more so than AIC but from what I have observed the 'better' players are no surprise to me. I know I have no right to judge them based on their performances this week but going off Iluvmyfooty's posts, my initial thoughts are reinforced and I feel my comments are warranted. I can confidently say that I think most of the QLD II squad are long shots for Oz Schools (exception of Meehan who is playing QLD I now anyway).

Guilfoyle has been going Okay. His throwing has improved and he is a busy player. Could sneak a bench position in one of the teams as there are not too many good hookers around and he is playing in a good team that has made the final. Kovacic in NSW 2's has produced some strong games. He has been one of the 2's more consistent performers. Barclay has had a good championship. He has to work on some defensive issues but he is a strong runner of the ball. Le Lievre has been consistent at fullback for the 2's and he has gotten more confident with each match. he is elusive and has joined in well when joining his backline. He has been kicking well too. As for the two boys in the CS side I can't say that I have noticed Robertson. This does not mean he is playing badly just hasn't stood out in their games. (Can't find Hall in the program what position does he play?)

All players whho play at these championships are good players. If they learn from their experience and understand the level that must be played and then take this with them and apply it to the normal school games they will improve not only their performance but their teams performance as well.

From what I have seen the Purcell/Roods combination has been the best attacking and defensive combination NSW has put together, however either of them and Stewart and Scarano in any combination I think will do good.

Dempsey has shown glimpses of his ability but he has to learn to lift his game and workrate at this level. If he does this I'm sure he will be a star at next years tournament.

Merriman had a very good halves game against QLD 1 and controlled his forwards well as well as giving good service to his backline. I don't think he is as good as Wessels though. I think Merriman will either be bench half for Oz Schools or in OZ A. Vaux has been very good when he has been on. He takes the line on and puts his runners nicely into gaps. He is another one with an outside chance at higher honours (he should also have been the starting 5/8 in all NSW 2 games).

There was huge amount of talk on the NSW U16 thread about the selection of Andrew Kellaway in NSW IIs - any feedback on his campaign?

he's had his moments and performed really well for a player his age. he is another that will benefit hugely for this experience. i think he will greatly appreciate getting back to his own age this year at the 16's Championship. i will be taking interest in his performance

thanks for that - yes a big ask to play effectively 2 years up at this level and definitely a big one for the experience file. He is normally a centre / fullback - where did they end up playing him for this tournament?

they just made the ask a bit bigger - play up 2 years at nationals and learn a newish position

Not that new... He's been playing wing for Scots in their 1st XV and played on the wing for GPS - so he's had more than a few games there now. From what i heard he has been ok with ball in hand but has struggled in defence, more so physically than positionally.

Ohhh ok thanks... so you think that kovacic, le lievre or barclay will be included in one of the sides? hall was a late replacement for kullen from riverview, he is a prop...

From speaking to a couple of people today and from what i have already seen of these players - Kovacic could be in with a shot. Apparently he played well Wednesday and was abrasive and mobile yesterday. Le Lievre and Barclay both ok with the ball in hand (although Gus runs himself in to trouble a bit too often for my liking), but both are poor defenders. In particular Barclay struggled for GPS 1s, his deficiencies have been glaring at this next step up.

At least the NSW 2s coaches were smarter than the GPS and NSW selectors when they realised that Lalakai's best/natural position is wing. Problem was that it took them a match to work it out and that cost them the game against Vic due to the weak defence in the centre from he and Barclay.

Are you sure Hall actually went? I know he was being talked about but i think they brought in a kid from one of the Queensland schools?

The other Joeys player Guilfoyle might get through to the next level - but mainly because they will have to pick 3 hookers at least between the Full schools side and the As. He is in one of the best teams of the week (possibly the best after tomorrow).

IMO hooker is one of the really weak positions at the champs this year. I wouldnt be happy throwing any of the NSW hookers up against England or NZ. They would get eaten alive! Hopefully there are some talented 2s amongst the other states - although it doesn't sound like it.

Going to be some really interesting slections announced tomorrow.

Does anyone have players who they think are dead certs?
