Some businesses work on a 20% to 30% ratio between salary and revenue generated for the business.

On that basis, if Mr Folau is being paid $400k for his stint with the 'Tahs nest year, then he will need to generate somewhere between $1.3m and $2m extra revenue to justify his salary. Ignoring the free advertising he has generated for Brand Tahs, using a figure of $40 per seat, he is going to need to draw in an extra 32000 to 50000 punters along to Home Games across the season.

Is he worth it? Will this contract be considered a sound business investment?

Will the tahs be releasing any players to accommodate folau?

Have the Tah's got an academy like the Reds, Brumbies and Force? I would have thought with the backrow shortages they might stack that with locks and blind sides in the hope of unearthing someone.

Stephen Hoiles could be a smokey for the backup 6 position. He trained with the tahs last season did he not.

nup, he is the 30th player

the EPS squad is

Jed Holloway (Southern Districts)
Luke Holmes (Warringah)
Sam Lane (Manly)
Matt Lucas (TBC)
Ben Volavola (Southern Districts)

so a young 5/6
a hooker
a 10
a half
and a 10/15

HJ, any shortfall in actual revenue produced by IF will be accounted for by the "buzz" he brings, lots of free advertising for the Tahs today, hopefully it persists into next year.

Did Folau ever kick in general play when in the NRL? It will be interesting to see what 2 years of AFL coaching will have done to that aspect of his game.

I'd love to be able to work on those figures. Well no, actually, because then I wouldn't be valuing my staff enough and would lose them.

Around 40% in my industry. (ie salary x 2.5 = revenue)

He has been signed for his running game and i would be happy to never see how he kicks in general play. Unless under pressure and he is putting the ball out, it should never touch his boot. If Barnes continues his poor kick options with Mitchell and possibly Folau on the wings he should be hooked as well.

There's always players that train with the squad for free. You mostly see them picked in trials. Jono Jenkins for example last year.

TAB are offering the Tah's at $19 to win the 2013 Super title. Worth a few bucks in my eyes. The squad looks better and they coaching staff a big improvement on recent years.

Like I said before I like the signing of IF. Hopefully they don't try and use him as a battering ram and get him the ball in space. Could be better than Savea if given the right opportunity.

It's all about the injuries though, best XV is excellent but the depth is not there, especially in the pack.

While Folau became the 30th signing for the franchise, Cheika still may be able to recruit another forward with back-up hooker Damien Fitzpatrick likely to miss the season after undergoing another anterior cruciate ligament operation.

The Tah's Players salary bill is about equal to their gate takings.
Forget about multiples.
On historical figures Izzy just has to get his family to pay their own way in,and he is as productive as his team mates have been in the past, in terms of income generation.

Why would you ignore advertising revenue generated? That's an obvious, substantial, and continual asset Izzy provides.

Let's not forget jersey sales, how much of a corporate asset he is (which is sadly a big deal), etc.

The AFL billed him as a much more expensive asset per year than we have and we all think they are business geniuses, surely you can see how very very well we've done out of this deal.

The matter of the fact is Izzy won't influence the Tahs crowds as much as a new coaching structure and some winning/entertaining rugby will..

What the Tahs now need to do is launch a massive marketing campaign in the western suburbs to capitalise on the profile and publicity which the GWS invested into Israel, otherwise the whole thing is just going to be a missed opportunity.

Do the Tahs have trial matches booked?
Change one of them and move it out West, sell is as Folau's debut match and play it at Parramatta just to piss the Eels off further.

The initial benefits the AFL received from signing Karmichael and subsequently Israel don't translate directly to rugby union because the whole concept has been done before, K and Izzy were breaking ground when they switched. Not to mention when Izzy signed with the GWS he was a Queensland and Australian Representative player with one of the highest scoring rates in the NRL, his profile has comparatively lost some of its shine in recent years.

I see your point but let me make a counterpoint.

All the above is logical and somewhat correct. Yes, it has been done before and yes, his profile is not what it once was. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean there still isn't a substantial amount of profits to be gained.

He's no longer a current Origin Rep but he is a player who is playing his 3rd of Australia's 4 major codes, which he has played in Australia's 3 biggest markets. On top of this we are playing him far less, which means that we don't need to generate the kind of profits the AFL were generating (which for reasons discussed we won't).

This IS a bigger win then we are giving it credit before. My league friends are so pissed off by this whole thing and completely keen to see this whole thing play out on our fields. The kids I coach are already sussing out his jersey and talking about how amazing he will be (rightly or wrongly that's a win, Tuquiri was every kid's favourite player long after he was any good). This is a massive attention grabbing event that on top of money has potential (though not the guarantee) of producing a good player, which his AFL switch never really had. Attention will translate to dollars in the short term and good business management will keep some of those added earnings in the long run.

We won't be earning AFL level attention but we will be earning a similar percentage when scaled by the size of our game and how much we are paying Izzy.

Understand what I'm saying?

Jayzus that's terrible news. The poor guy is so injury prone, I dare say the worst in Oz.
He would be fighting with Justin Turner for the honours. Poor bastards and both key position players. The ones in your squad you can't afford to be crocked.

The Rant

So looking at the squad and picking a 15 here's something I'd like to see.

1.Fatcat
2.TPN
3.Kepu
4.Douglas
5.Timani
6. Dennis
7. Hooper
8. Palu
9. McKibbon/Lucas
10. Foley
11. Drew
12. TURNER
13 AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)
14. Folau
15. Barnes

The forwards are pretty straight forward to be honest. Could easily the Wallabies 8 next year.

Backline is tricky to balance in the midfield. My solution is Turner. I'm not a massive fan of him out on the wing. He doesn't get involved as much as drew or digby. But he fancies himself in the centres. On top of size and pace he has great quick hands. Let's leave Barnes out the back and allow foley to grow into a 10.
