Haven't seen the game yet and sadly I learned yesterday that Lelostream is gone from YouTube...

But as to the crowd, the weather in the eastern suburbs yesterday was unbelievably bad and that's Tahs heartland. Sheets of water, driving wind, cold. It was a truly miserable first day of autumn.

I'd reckon that the weather and the change from Saturday night to Friday night would've halved the crowd at least. Trying to get around Sydney on any Friday night is difficult, throw in the weather which was atrocious and the difficulty in getting to the SFS by public transport and 11,000 is what you'd expect. They were only getting 13,000 last year on fine Saturday nights.

I think people from Melbourne and Brisbane where the is excellent transport to and from facilities underestimate this, combined with the fact that a ground built for winter sport has about 80% of seats open to the weather.

I was planning to go last night, but the only way I go to the SFS on a Friday is to pick the kids up from school, go almost straight to the ground, watch the curtain raiser and have something to eat. Not an option last night as curtain raiser cancelled and not prepared to sit in freezing cold for hours until main game. It's 1 1/2 hours minimum in traffic if I leave after 4.30.

Anymore cliches?

Funny thing is, beautiful and sunny when I left Melbourne.

Fair weather supporters.

Ok, two weeks in and all the tries have been well constructed team tries, I like that a lot.

I wonder how they will hold up against the Brumbies, but I love the intent and the confidence will grow as they learn to trust each other.

What was the ruling for the penalty on Carter for tackling Higgenbotham in the air? Are you literally not every allowed to tackle a player who has two feet off the ground or was it because it turned into a dangerous tackle given the way Higgers fell to the ground? Seems odd that anyone is untouchable if their feet are off the ground for any reason.

I thought that Carter chose to take him. He saw him jump and went anyway.

It's bullshit, if I'm 5m from the line with 1 defending ahead of me why don't I just jump up in the air and get a penalty..

From their first two outings, clearly the Waratahs have the capacity to play some really good footy; great support play / offload game in the second half especially last night. Consistency within a game is proving to be their Achilles' heel so far, as it was a lot last year. At least they're going better in the second halves this year, rather than grinding to a halt towards the end of games last year (we all remember the multiple losses of 1-3 points or so).
The Rebels played some enterprising footy in the first half, and I was alarmed at how easily they made metres one-off the rucks against the Tahs in that first half.
Set piece was pretty good, especially the scrum, except when the Rebels shoved them off their own ball when they had 8 on 7. I was yelling at the TV too about Henderson with his tripod technique at LHP that was let go pretty much all game. Although, it is better that the scrums stayed up and finished, rather than ending up in a heap on the ground, I guess?
The Carter tackle, in real time, as opposed to the multiple slo-mo renderings, looked pretty reflexive - it would take some amazing presence of mind to drop your arms and get smashed by Higginbotham's knees in your chest in a split second, when you have set to tackle him. As with all these tackles, I'm sure plenty will debate that and some might even think he planned it 30 secs earlier.
I haven't changed my opinion that the Tahs will be a thorn in a few sides this year, but will probably be not quite at the pointy-end come play-off time.

Higgers wasn't fielding a kick, I don't see why he should get any protection about being tackled in the air. If anything he could get pinged for dangerous play.

You'd have to rule that it was a tip tackle from Carter, which I don't think he effected.

Ok, have not watched a replay yet, Sydney should never give out about Melbourne weather again, been able to wear shorts to our home games and needed a jacket last night.

Thought Hugh Pyle had a great game, led the forwards well and the lineout stole a good few throws in important positions. Really did miss delve, don't think Neville is going to live up to last seasons hype, Jones is better at lock than blindside. Sorry is ineffective and will be gone as soon as Vuna or Woodward are back.

Watching through the game again on TV (after being at the ground last night) and the Rebels LHP is putting his hand on the ground in every scrum where the Rebels have the feed. He should have been penalised every time.

It wasn't just a single touch for balance. He puts his hand down and keeps it there for support.

Yeah, I thought the ref and his team had a pretty good game. The ref did better on debut than a lot of players do - but that one thing stuck out.

As you indicate - it was regular, not just every now and then.

My blog on the game is here:

Yeah I love the offloads too, I have always bemoaned how the Kiwis are miiiles better than us at it, now it looks like we are finally starting to utilise them.

I was at the game last night. I had planned to go with mates all week, but when we saw the weather on Friday we made the call to go to the pub instead. I can normally take a bit of rain, but it was fucking atrocious- sheeting rain, windy, cold. But then about 30 minutes before kick-off it cleared and so we changed our minds.

We live close to the ground and could afford to leave our decision late- a lot of the Tahs core fans live more than 30 minutes away from the ground and such a late decision would not have been possible. 11,000 is still a bit light, but the atmosphere was really good for some reason, crowd was much louder than usual.

I thought it was a pretty poor game from my seat (behind the posts), but I just watched the replay and was pretty impressed. It was a fast, skilfull game with both sides showing good intent. Still a few little errors and silly penalites that could have been eradicated, but I was happy with the Tahs performance.

Absolutely. You could potentially argue that Carter should have tried harder to ease him to the ground but the reality of that situation was that Carter was almost stationary and Higgers is running forward and then leaping further forward. His momentum was always going to see him end up upside down with any contact with Carter. Even if Carter pulls his arms away and just lets Higgers run into him, momentum is still going to cause Higgers to do a flip.

It is crazy that the Tahs are penalised for this. A player shouldn't be able to access the rules relating to protection in the air when they aren't fielding a kick. Even more so, Higgers had already knocked the ball forwards in the air and was essentially fielding his own knock on.

It might have been a dangerous situation but it was entirely caused by Higginbotham. That is the reason why the defender shouldn't be penalised. I am just glad that some sanity prevailed and Carter wasn't yellow carded or worse.
